This past weekend, the Iroquois, Ontario based Whitteker Motorsports team traveled to the Can-Am Speedway, in Lafargeville, New York on Friday night, followed by the season opener at the Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night. After the challenges the team faced a week ago, it wouldn’t take much to make this weekend a better one.

“Last week, prior to heading to Can-Am, we had problems with the carburetor on the primary car, so we had to load the back up car”, says team owner Kevin Whitteker. “Then on the way to the track, we had a problem with the truck. Fortunately, after a call to Riverside Pontiac in Prescott, we were met with a temporary replacement truck, and we continued on our way”.

Friday at Can-Am, 15 year old, Luke Whitteker faced the same challenges as the rest of the 32 cars signed into the pit area. With all cars running the same GM crate engines, and a dry slick track, passing was not an easy task. Luke started the race from 9th place, and at the end of the 20-lap event, Luke had persevered to a 12th place finish.

On Saturday night the Whitteker team traveled to their home based track, the Brockville Ontario Speedway. It was the 2009 Season Open at Brockville. 25 sportsman cars were on hand to battle the tricky quarter mile bullring, located just north of Brockville.

Luke started the 25 lap main event from deep in the field, and quickly battled his way into the top 10. At the finish, Luke drove his 2006 Rust Check, Jim's Performance Plus, Coldwell Banker, Steve Summers Coburn Realty, NAPA/Parcoll Products, Riverside Pontiac, Cohen & Lord Insurance Brokers, Quaker State, and Finish Line Web Design sponsored Bicknell car to a strong 7th place run.

Prior the feature event at the Brockville Speedway on Friday night, Luke joined the rest of his racing peers on the track for the annual driver autograph night. It was a great chance for the drivers to meet the fans, and for the fans to meet their favourite drivers.

“Its always great to meet the fans, and its great them to be able to get a good look at the cars that we race”, says Luke.

Next week, the 38 special will once again travel to Lafargeville, New York for the Can-Am Speedway event, followed by the Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday.
