ROC at Selinsgrove Cancelled; Official Point Standings Statement Released

BINGHAMTON, NY…The Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour was set for its opening weekend this past Friday and Saturday at the Selinsgrove Speedway. Unfortunately, the Saturday Big Block Modified portion of the racing program was canceled due to inclement weather.

Like in years past, the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour had planned once again to only award points for a driver’s best one day finish over the two days of racing. The Friday Small Block Modified event is the only time during the tour that the Small Blocks run exclusively in their own event. Many northeast Modified teams only have either a Big Block or a Small Block Modified and the RoC Tour officials put in the points rule in fairness to the teams that make up the overall northeast Modified landscape. If both days of points counted and a team only had either a Small Block or Big Block Modified they could lose an entire day of points.

Once again this year many of the teams that make up the Saturday portion of the Icebreaker weekend did not have Small Block Modifieds at their disposal to compete in the Friday event. With the Saturday race being canceled, Race of Champions officials were left with a dilemma on how to fairly handle the point standings so that northeast Modified teams were not eliminated from the point race due to the Saturday cancellation. This would not only be unfair to the teams but also alter the competitive playing field that as a tour we have always tried to achieve. At the same time RoC Officials had to weigh the effort, time and money spent by the teams that competed on Friday evening.

Weighing all of this, here is how the points will be awarded from the Icebreaker VI Weekend: All teams that competed in the Friday RoC Small Block Modified event will be awarded 20 “show up points”. The teams that won the three heat races will keep their 5 heat race bonus points. As in years past 25 bonus points will be awarded for teams with perfect attendance. That bonus will still be awarded with attendance tracking to start this Saturday with the event at New Egypt Speedway. Teams that were not in attendance this past weekend will not be penalized and will remain eligible for the perfect attendance bonus.

Race of Champions Director, Andrew Harpell commented on the decision, “The weather this past weekend made things very difficult for every team that was either in attendance on Friday or did not attend due to the poor forecast.” “With the Big Block Modified show eliminated we had to make a decision that would not also eliminate those teams from the 2013 point championship after week one.” He added, “This is an unprecedented situation and we feel we are handling it in the best manner consistent with our policies of competitor fairness.”

The Friday night RoC Small Block event at Selinsgrove was certainly star studded and Saturday looked to be a very impressive field of the top northeast Modified talent. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate for everyone involved. This Saturday, March 23rd the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour picks up at the New Egypt Speedway with the Cabin Fever 60. The Modified race winner could earn as much as $10,000 for the victory. The Race of Champions Sportsman will also be in action for their 2013 lid lifter.
