First of all let me apologize for the lateness of this blog. It's been one of those weeks where you can never catch up. I've been drained this week and to get anything done was a challenge. Sunday night I got home from Utica-Rome at 11pm and by the time I got my stories done and sent out to Area Auto Racing News it was close to 2am. I haven't been able to recover from the lack of sleep all week. I'm up at 2am right now as I'm posting this because it is the first down time I've had all week
Well after a night of driving home we woke up and went to work on the car. We got the car fixed from the night before at Brewerton and did our regular maintenance to it after wards. Switching the bodies to the regular body for tonight's race. We where off to the races.
The night was very windy and a storm was a brewin`. In typical Merrittville fashion they where determined to get the show on the road. The NYDCA (New York Dwarf Car Association, which is the club we run under) had a meeting to d
Well off we go again for another weekend of racing. We start the weekend off at Brewerton Speedway, going to try and get some luck going there. The weather looks iffy but whats new? So the three hour drive begins. We brought our nice weather with us up untill about syracuse. Then the rain hit. It wouldn't last for long, as soon as we got near the track the roads where dry and it was race time.
The track got hit with a fair bit of rain before we got there and the grounds where soaked. Owell, its
With one full month complete in the Northeast Dirt Modified season its time to take a bit deeper look at some of the statistics to date. While these statistics are not “official†they are what I have collected as apart of the Dirt Track Digest.Com / LaGrange Motorsports Media Power Rankings.
Modifieds
So far a total of 42 different drivers have visited victory lane with nine of them doing so more than once. Pat Ward and Bobby Varin lead the way with four wins a piece. Brett Hearn sits th
This past weekend we where off to Merrittville Speedway to start the season at the local track. It was the 2nd night of the season for the track and my 8th or so time behind the wheel. For the opening night we brought out the Troops scheme and had it on display before the races. Chris Rynold came over and chated for a bit and he of course took a few shots of the new paint scheme before it hit the track.
Merrittville has introduced a new system at the track which calls for every driver to
One of the most underappreciated persons at the speedway on a week in and week out basis has to be the man on the flag stand. A good flagger has a lot of responsibilities on a given night. They must be aware of what is going on in front of them on the speedway, be in tune with the officials in the tower and in some instances be part of the entertainment being presented.
For this week’s blog I want to focus on the entertainment part of the description above. On a weekly basis I’m fortunat
Thanks for all your questions this week. I picked this one as it is fresh.
The Hall induction caught me by surprise. It is an honor to be nominated. I did believe that I would be there someday. Not sure if the timing is right or not. I believe there are still a lot of racers not in the Hall and they should be there well before me. I mean 48 years old vs guys well into their 60's and 70's,,, give me a break. AND I don't like anyone telling me that I am all done in the sport. Hell I may just co
This entire weekend was filled with drivers getting that first win of the season at their particular home track. Pat O’Brien at Brewerton Speedway, Matt DeLorenzo at Fonda Speedway and Pat Ward at Utica-Rome Speedway each reached Victory Lane for the first time this season.
Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway, Pat O’Brien earned his first ever Modified feature win. One could see the relief on his face when he got out of the car. It was a hard earned win as he had to hold off the charg
Once the DIRT racing season had started, I told myself that I would no longer write about NASCAR. There is far more important DIRT racing stuff out there to waste time writing about NASCAR racing, and the crap that goes in that series, that I was once proud to be a fan on.
However, after watching today’s debacle of the “race†at Talladega, I have to get on my soapbox. NASCAR is going to get someone hurt, or worse if they don’t change the unnecessary, and fictitious form of racing that
Great question. You guys are still being tough on me!! I guess I should ask DIRT OR ASPHALT? haaaaa got ya there!!! I mean I raced against Junior Hanley, Don Biederman, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Dick Trickle, on asphalt. You all know the crew I raced against on DIRT. In asphalt back in 1979 I ran in a ASA race at Cayuga Speedway against a tough crew that eventually (at least most) went on to NASCAR carrers. Soooooooo I can't downplay those guys. On DIRT I really liked racing with certain guys.
Sorry this is a day later than usual but I’m still recovering from a long weekend of darts and racing. We’ll get things started with weekend news and notes.
It was a weekend full of dominating performances. Bobby Varin led the entire way in the 30-lap Modified feature event on Saturday at Fonda Speedway then backed it up with a 30-lap win at Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday night. Besides Pat Ward, I’m not sure if there is another Modified driver off to such a promising start to 2009
If the first full weekend of racing in the Capital District was any indication of the season to come – we are all in for a hell of a 2009 season. A total of 37 Modifieds, 34 Budget Sportsman, 19 Pro Stocks and 22 Limiteds entered the Albany-Saratoga Speedway Friday night.
Brett Hearn took the win, his 93rd at the track over title contenders Ronnie Johnson and Matt Delorenzo. It’s clear that this year’s title fight will not come easy to anyone, including Hearn. With Johnson, Delorenzo, D
The car stripped down to be gone over from the night before at Brewerton.
Almost ready to go back to the track Saturday at Merrittville.
Well this just being a practice there is not much to talk about. We ran three sessions.
The first session the car was very comfortable to drive but could be a lot faster then it was. So we changed gears and did a couple minor setup changes and got ready for the next session.
I must add that the track was in incredible shape as always at Merrittvi
Well, Friday night we headed down to Brewerton Speedway for our 5th race of the season. After a 3 hour drive we arrived. Now I have to say that the line up for the pits was ridiculous. We got there at 6pm, and nearly missed hot laps, which were around 645.
So anyways, we got out for hot laps and the car was amazing, very fast and very driveable. Turning the 2nd quick lap in hot laps, no it doesn't mean anything but, made the night seem to get off to a great start.
After hot laps we got read
INASANE, CRAZY AZZ FREAKIN' INSANE, TOTALLY DOMINATION and DESTRUCTION of an All Star field, thats probably the best way to put it, ohh did I forget DOMINATION, lol...Cuz man, that's what it was last night, an ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE driving exhibition but on by Duane Howard in the BPG Troyer #4 coming from the back to park the his hot rod in VL....With "K-Dog" starting on the pole, and CVD right behind him in 3rd, many folks thought it was going to come down to these 2 for the win, and for a litt
The Long Wait is over – The Season is here
For the majority of us race fans, there are no early trips to Florida in February to watch the Volusia races, for most of us, there are no trips to Hagerstown, Williams Grove, or Lincoln Speedways. Most of us have to wait until the calendar flips to April before we hit the track for the first time in the season.
For me, my first race of the season was at the legendary Fonda Speedway. We all know the outcome of the race, Pat Ward won once againâ€
Fonda Speedway swung open its doors this past Saturday afternoon and as many of you already know it was an exciting 40-lap Modified feature that saw Pat Ward grab the $4,000 win with Bobby Varin a very close second.
Fonda Speedway Victory Lane
- Varin had an extremely good day as he was able to set a new track record with a lap of 18.136 in his heat race. He had held the prior record which was an 18.4. Guess the picture on the back of his car holds true.

Finally, after a very long, cold and dreary winter the Capital District racing season was able to get under way this past weekend. With the weather man once again about as spot on as a dizzy two year old both the Albany-Saratoga Speedway and Fonda Speedway were able to open their gates for official on track action.
On Friday night The Great Race Place was a buzz with a test and tune session for all CVRA divisions. I signed in about 5pm however inspection and practice had been going on since mu
I knew this one was coming and the author of the question will remain anonymous as the e mail was unsigned and the return address was fictitious (chickenshit!! lol,,,,). OK,,,, where do I start?. The definition of racing as per dictionary.com "any contest or competition, esp. to achieve superiority:" The definition of rules, "a principle or regulation governing conduct, action, procedure, arrangement, etc". The racer's goal is racing and winning. The racers interpretation of the rule will alwa
Well, I have let this go to the way side over the past month or so. Mainly because I didn't have much to tell you. The car has been gone over and is ready to go racing. We have come up with a schedule which now I can share so if I race near you, come say hi. Meeting new people is the best part of the sport, sorta haha.
2009 Racing Schedule :
April :
Friday 17th - Brewerton Speedway
Saturday 18th - Merrittville Speedway
Sunday 19th - Humberstone Speedway
Saturday 25th - Merrittville
Well the Pennsylvania SBM season got underway last weekend, Saturday was at the Grandview Speedway and Sunday was at the Big Diamond Raceway (using this as a rain daye from Friday).
We pulled up the hill in Bechtelsville on Saturday early, a little after "noonish", as the 'Pound had a BIG TIME itch that needed to be scratched for some serious SBM action. Well, let me tell ya's, it was BRUTAL up on that hill, as it was partly cloudy, but the winds were gusting up to 30-40 mph, with temps han
This was the question I selected this week because I love talking Syracuse. In the early days I really felt threatened at the cuse. Scared the crap out of me every time I went there. We were not fast and never qualified very well (sometimes not at all). Something inside made me feel like I needed to conquer the place. Qualifying was the first step in my conquest. We really worked hard on the first step until it became an obsession. In 1990 we sat in the top six for the first time. I don't think
This past weekend, I attended the Frontenac Mall car show in Kingston, Ontario. The show is hosted annually by Glenn Stewart and Ed Palmer.
The show is hosted at the Frontenac Mall, which has lost some of its lustre over the past few years now that the WALMART moved to the other side of town, but nonetheless, the show went on, and it turned out to be the most successful car show yet.
29 cars, ranging from Brockville Street Stocks, to drag racing cars filled the mall. Brockville Speedway wa
