remember when the victoria race meant something

Recommended Posts

I say it every year, I'll never understand why Gene felt the need to pay money for the name of the race when he could have established his own marquee event at Utica with a great purse/format.  The Victoria will always be at Fulton the week before Super Dirt Week.

Question of the day...

How is it that Thunder Mountain can draw 73 cars on a week night (in the same week no less), and U/R only drew 40 for what once was one of the most anticipated events of the season? I'm not throwing stones here, just asking a legitimate question.

IMO the atmosphere of the Vic at Fulton can not be  recreated anywhere else. Just the way you sit so high above the track at Fulton has an effect on it. It felt more like an event, not just a race.

I always liked the Outlaw Circuit years of the Vic the best. Kinsella's win over Horton is one of my favorite races ever.

IMO, that is far more a statement that teams believe in Deyo and want to support him than a negative reflection on what any other track may be doing. Without running down any tracks in particular, the fact that he has drawn 70+ cars (with teams from all over) multiple times at some of the, um, rustic places he has in recent years is a testament to him and his promotions.

I also think teams like the idea of a new place one where they feel everyone has the perception of a fair shot, the average weekend warrior is not thinking he can go into U/R and run against Stew, same guy thinks he doesn't stand a chance at Fulton with Decker there. But they think they have a shot at places the big guys are not used to.

I think there is some truth to what you are saying. Also the fact that Utica Rome is a lot bigger track. Also Thunder Mountain is more centrally located.Thunder Mountain had a lot of Southern tier runners I believe and regulars making up the 73. Then you had all the traveling teams invading. When you look at Utica Rome their regulars are the traveling teams. So your not going to get as many "invaders".

Personally I don't think their is anything sad about 40 mods in the pits. Especially when some of the guys have already raced two or three nights this weekend

What/who's mod was McCreadie racing?

the problem IS THE TRACK, PASSING IS AT A PREMIUM AND MOST DRIVERS CANT HANDLE THAT SLIPPERY OF A TRACK . I LIKE THE PLACE BUT RACING THERE NOW DAYS IS TEARABLE.

It is true that most drivers can't handle that slippery of a track. However, I have seen PLENTY of passing at U-R in multiple divisions//.  Far more than some tracks to the East.  Just over a week ago, there was a TON of passing...and 3...and 4 wide passing in the GO Nuclear race.

The 50-50 on Sunday was $1700+, the 50-50 on Monday was approx. $780.00. The small amount tells you something about the size of the crowd....either that or they were broke too buy a 50-50 ticket.
Been to U-R five times this year, but honestly not sure when we're going back. Just too expensive when you go with older kids. The sign says students but only goes up to 14. My guess is kids around there must drop out at that age.

For those who didn't go to U-R yesterday:
$27.00 Ticket
$5.00 Cheesburger
$3.00 soda
Total $35.00

This is just an example, because I won't pay that much for food.
I did have to buy a small cup of coffee...too much yard work during the day and was yawning, cost of small coffe $1.75...no joke!

Not saying I won't go back, but it'll be several weeks, unless it becomes more $family$ friendly.

I think that some of the car count loss is now that brewerton/fulton are dirtcar there are alot of guys that dont have american racers mounted now that they run hoosiers weekly. I know that is the reason my brother wasnt there.

I'm not so sure about the no passing deal. I see larry&phelps ,& Mike Mahaney pass a lot of cars. Don't know exactly how slippery it is but definately has some action.Tires seem to last well with the proper set up. A quality class of drivers. All Classes seem to have talent there. If you don't stay to the very end you miss some good battles.I had a conversation with Mike Mahaney for 15-20 minutes. What a class act. He seems to have it together. Talent? we haven't seen all he has yet. Hope he stays at UR for all year. I am impressed with him so far.Just my thoughts! ccbcrewchief

Passing cars and racing with cars are too different things apparently.  I like to see people swap lanes and trade paint type of racing.  not an oh this guy missed the bottom or spun tire in the center of the corner passing.  That's what a lot of people i feel get confused about.  Yeah you can make moves if you are hooked up perfect example Middletown. I like to see RACING not slippery don't miss the groove or you are sitting duck races.  Plus i think its way too early to put an extra 200 laps on a motor in a race where you shoot just to top ten it.  If you had a legit chance to win you went if you know top 10 would be your major accomplishment you stayed home hence 40 cars.     Now on the other hand 50 laps on a tuesday paying 5100 to win and a place where if you are any decent you can win you get 72 race cars.    When fulton gets 65-80 cars this october than you will see what i'm talking about
