Friday April 16 the Wait is Over as Afton Motorsports Park Roars to Life

AFTON, NY – Coming up this Friday night at the speedway pit gates will open at 4:00 for the first of two scheduled test & tune sessions before the race season officially gets in full swing on Friday April 30. All divisions are open to come and check out their cars and see if they are set to go for the season. Track crew will be checking and evaluating the track surface and the official will have a chance to get back up to speed after a long hiatus. With just three races held last year due to the states covid 19 concerns everyone is anxious to get back going.

Divisions for the 2021-race-season; It will consist of the Modified, big or small block, Crate 602 Sportsman, Open Sportsman, Street Stock, Factory Stock * new for 2021 and Sling Shot division every other week.

Procedures for test and tune this week; Pit gates open at 4:00pm with admission price $25.00 with grandstands free with a non-perishable food donation for the local food bank. Cars will hit the track around 5:00pm or as soon as folks are ready. The divisions will rotate throughout the evening as track promoter Ron Ford said we’ll give them as much time as needed.

What is new for the 2021 Season;  As mentioned above the the Factory Stock division has been added for the season, as there has been many request for it so will be watching to see how the class will grow at the track. More clay has been laid down in the corners and some needed spots on the speedway. Since it got a whole new surfacing job back in 2019 and only one season and three this past season the track didn’t need to be completely redone. Two brand new set of bleachers raised up on a three foot base will heighten the viewing capacity in the pit area and will make it easier to social distance. The most recent news is the hiring of Gary Folk Jr. a multi-faceted individual who has been around racing his whole life. He will be talking to the drivers and doing any job necessary that might come along. It is one of those things where an official of his capacity gets put out on the waiver wire, you have to snap him up and you will find room in your organization for him. Lastly like always there will be new drivers, division changes for others, new cars and or color combinations. Is it Friday yet?

What is staying the same; Start time remains the same at 7:00 sharp and a fast-paced show, as is the norm to get people in and out in about a three to three and a half hour time frame. Same great food and a special or two will be available at both of the food concessions. The well-groomed and spacious pit area will once again be there for the teams to work on their machines without laying on rocks. One last same remaining the same will be the legendary voice of the Southern Tier Leon Andrus aka ‘The Round Mound of Racing Sound’ stepping behind the microphone for his thirtieth season of calling racing action.

Wants and Needs; Start with the needs first. The marketing/advertising partners at the track has some great sponsors that have been at the track for a few years and some new ones coming on board with everyone very much appreciated. With that said there is always room for more partners in both monetary and products to help a very tough business to try an operate in the green. Product sponsors for racers is always welcome to enhance the great competitors that call Afton Motorsports Park home. One of the other great wants and would work great for track and the sponsor would be a official pace car or truck. It would be used to pace the field for the start of feature events in turn giving much exposure to the sponsor. It would be used at local parades and on display during the Afton Fair held right on the Fairgrounds property. I know there must be some dealer out there that would love this great marketing tool and some great businesses ready to climb on board. If you would like to get involved in one of these opportunities give Leon Andrus a call or text me at 607,245.6385 or drop me an email at message me on my Facebook page. You can also call or text promoter Ron Ford at 607.624.3772 or message him on his Facebook page or emailing the following

Now onto the Needs; A few jobs still need to be filled like a hand scorer, concessions help and miscellaneous jobs. Get hold of one of the Ron Ford methods above if you have interest and experience would be great. Like all tracks we all need good weather for the season to try to regroup from the 2020 season. So come on out enjoy the start of getting back to normalcy and support your local speedway and like always support the great sponsor’s when you need any of there products and or services. See you Friday Night
