Marcuccilli and Colagiovanni Score Can-Am Pabst Shootout Wins – DTD Exclusive

By:  Bobby Sweeney

LAFARGEVILLE, NY – When Billy Dunn starts on pole at statistically his best track, Can-Am Speedway, he is going to be hard to beat. Through the early stages of the 50-lap small block Modified feature, Dunn showed the way, with Marcuccilli hanging close. Traffic allowed Marcuccilli to reach the rear bumper of Dunn near the halfway mark, but Dunn still seemed in full control.

The only yellow of the race flew on lap 30, but under this yellow, Dunn pulled pitside with rear end problems. This handed the lead to Marcuccilli, who went hammer down on the restart to drive away from Lance Willix and Tim Sears. Marcuccilli opened up a far bigger lead than Dunn ever had on him, crossing under the checkered flag to score the $3,000 victory. Willix came home second, with Sears, Erick Rudolph, and Tim Fuller completing the top five.

“When it gets rubbered-up like that, you just have to fall in line and hope the guy you’re chasing makes a mistake,” Marcuccilli said. “If Billy didn’t have any trouble, he wins the race. Even then, you have to put yourself in the situation to take advantage of anybody else’s misfortune. We ran well early in the night which allowed us to start up front, and inherit the lead when Dunn had trouble.”

Once out front, Marcuccilli marched away in the final 20 circuits, taking the checkered by over eight seconds.

“I had no idea where anyone was, we were all stacked together in traffic prior to the yellow so I wasn’t sure how we’d all shake out in clean air,” noted Marcuccilli. “Luckily, the rubber was really wide in turns one and two, so it would’ve taken some effort to miss it. I just had to focus on slowing down and sticking the bottom of three and four, and I thought we’d be alright.”
