Fuller Gets Third Of The Season At Can-Am

By:  Tim Baltz

LAFARGEVILLE, NY – It was a jam-packed night of racing at the Can Am Speedway this past Friday night with six divisions in the pit area. A fast race track gave the fans some exciting racing all evening long.

The FABCO DIRTcar Pro Stocks were making their first appearance in over a month and it was a great battle for the race lead in the opening laps. Tyler Bushey led the way over Eli Gilbert and Justin White in the early portion of the 20 lap feature. Bushey started to lose the handling on his car allowing Gilbert to get by on lap 11 and it appeared he would drive away. However, Bushey would get the lead back on lap 14 in a see-saw battle for the top spot. With the top two trading positions and a bit of paint, points leader Bruno Richard would make things interesting as he charged by Justin White for third and quickly moved in on the leaders. On this night, Eli Gilbert would hold on to take his 1st win of the season at Can Am. Bushey settled for 2nd, over Bruno Richard, Justin White and Zack Daniels.

The Panther Frameworx 602 Crate Sprint cars were ready for their 15 lap feature and Jordan Bennett would have his way with the field from start to finish. Bennett built up a huge lead while behind him the points leaders Josh Verne Jr. and Logan Crisafulli had a spirited battle for 2nd, which was not over as the field came for the checkered flag. Bennett would go unchallenged for his 2nd win of the year but Josh Verner Jr. made a move for second in turn four, but spun out, giving Logan Crisafulli 2nd and Taylor Doxtator 3rd.

The Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified division was up next and Preston Forbes was on a mission to try and win his first ever feature. Forbes would lead the opening 11 laps with Lance Willix, Jeff Sykes, Tim Fuller and Scott Webb filling out the top five. After a couple of quick caution flags, Forbes would have Lance Willix to his outside on the restart along with Tim Fuller, who had charged to 3rd. On the restart Fuller made his way by Willix using the inside lane, taking 2nd. He then ran down Preston Forbes and took the lead on lap 12. From this point forward it was a driving clinic as Fuller pulled away while Willix and Forbes tried to catch the defending champion with Ryan Bartlett and Scott Webb completing the top 5. On this night it was Tim Fuller scoring his third win of the season. Lance Willix, Preston Forbes, Ryan Bartlett and Shaun Shaw completed the top 5.

Francis White was looking to end a rough start to the 2022 season in the 15 lap Marsha Gibbons TLC Real Estate Thundercar division. White led the early laps over Jock Symonds and Joe Orvis. A caution on lap 6 bunched up the field which gave the advantage to Symonds. When the green flew it was Symonds taking the top spot away with Orvis charging to 2nd. Over the final laps Jock Symonds would put it on auto pilot as he scored his 2nd win in 4 starts at Can Am. Francis White would rebound for second, with Joe Orvis Tony Frezzo and Anthony St. Mary Jr. completing the top five.

Tyler Stevenson “single handedly” won the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature on this night. We’ll explain that one later. Stevenson was fast in the early laps as he took the lead from early leader Ryan Shanahan near the halfway point with Dave Rogers and Jessica Power right there to challenge. Once the laps started to wind down Stevenson, Rogers and Power were checking out on the field until lap 15 when Gavin Eisle slowed with a problem in turn 1 bringing out the yellow. On the restart Stevenson would draw away from the field while Jessica Power made several attempts to get by Dave Rogers for the runner up spot. Over the final laps, nobody was catching Tyler Stevenson as he marched to his second win of the year in the 20 lap event, he also did it with a broken right hand, which he revealed in victory lane. Broken hand and all, Stevenson held off Dave Rogers, Jessica Power, Mike Fowler and Tyler Corcoran for the victory.

The Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman closed out the night and Paul DeRuyter meant business as he was looking for his third win in a row. DeRuyter made short work of the field, going from 4th to the top spot by turn 2 on the initial start. Owen Nier tried his best to close the gap but Nier would have to settle for second on this night. Paul DeRuyter would claim his third straight win in the 12 lap event. Owen Nier held on for second over Cole Perry, Joe Trichillo and Joey Wilcox.

Next week the speedway is back with all six divisions on the card once again. The racing action gets underway at 7pm
