We checked in with Mad Max McLaughlin about the announcement that he has signed a driver development contract with Niece Motorsports for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for the 2018 season. The team will be fielding a truck for Max in at least four races. Here is what Max had to say about the opportunity and what it means for him and his plans for the season.
How did the ride come about ?
Max : They approached me about running Eldora in 2017, but we just couldn’t make it happen. We stayed in contact, talked all the time and I have even helped work on the trucks in the shop. We have both worked really hard for this and we finally made it happen.
How does the deal effect modified racing this season?
Max: It wont. I will still be running a full schedule and chasing the 2018 Super DIRTcar Series title.
How has the last few years of modified racing prepared you for this opportunity?
Max: I think that a BB Modified is one of the most difficult cars to drive. Tons of people say that if you can learn to drive one of these cars, you can drive anything. I think Stewart Friesen has proved that moving to the Trucks, and Larry Wight has also proved that by qualifying for the Chili Bowl.
What are you looking forward to with this opportunity?
Max: Being able to live out my dream. This is the opportunity that short track racers like myself dream about. I will do my best to build a relationship with the guys In the shop, and make the most of it by hopefully have some good runs.
Max: I cant thank Al Niece, Cody Efaw, and everyone at Niece Motorsports enough. Also would like to thank Al Heinke, because if it wasn’t for him putting me in a race car in 2016, I probably wouldn’t be racing right now. Very blessed to do what I love every day.
