To win an indoor series race you need a lot of things to go your way. You have to avoid incidents, have the right lane on the restarts and just be in the right place at the right time. Coming into Friday night’s first ever Albany Indoor race at the Times Union Center, none of those things had happened for Anthony Payne during this seasons events. If something could go wrong, it did.
Then the racing gods decided to smile on the 18-year-old driver from Fair Lawn, N.J. He earned the final spot in Friday night’s 40-lap feature to start 24th on the grid. He proceeded from there to survive the event, put himself in the right place at the right time to eventually earn his first ever indoor series victory joining his father, Joey, on the all-time indoor win list.
“To be able join my dad with an indoor series win, it’s always been a dream growing up,” said Payne afterwards. “My ultimate dream was to start first and second with my father on the front row. Unfortunately he wasn’t in the race, but being able to make the A-Main was a dream to me. Being able to start last and win, that’s always been another one of my dreams after my father was able to do it at Thompson.”
