Kyle Coffey was running with the big boys on Wednesday night at Volusia.
The New York driver came home fourth in the 30-lap feature as he trailed only winner Peter Britten, runner up Jimmy Phelps and Jack Lehner across the line.
Kyle told Dirt Track Digest, “Tonight went pretty well. We had good car speed right off the bat after we changed a lot of stuff from the first night. I just worked really well. We were able to fine tune it throughout the night.”
It started out on the positive side as he said, “We were able to stay in the top five in our group all night and had a good starting spot in the feature after running third in our heat.”
Continuing, he noted, “It’s probably one of the best handling cars I’ve had down here throughout the last five times we’ve come down. It was great to rebound from opening night where we were not good at all. We decided it was best to park the car after our heat and go back to the drawing board for tonight.
“It is our best finish here at Volusia at we ran eighth last year one night and we haven’t really been a car that could contend for wins, but I think we made a big step in the right direction tonight. We are looking forward to the next three nights of racing here.”
Heading into Volusia, Kyle talked about expectations, saying, “We just wanted to make the race every night. It’s a really good field of cars and it’s tough to be up front each night. This is the car that we started running midway through last season and have a C.C. Performance engine that is a stout piece and was running great tonight.”
Racers never give up and Kyle showed that by noting, “I was just very motivated to get to the track today after not getting to race last night. We just were on top of things all day with the right adjustments to keep the car quick. I can’t thank my team and sponsors enough. I really can’t thank them all enough and was happy to get a good run for them.”
