Gular Heating Up At Big Diamond After Second Win In Three Weeks – DTD Exclusive

By KEN BRUCE

With season over halfway done at the Big Diamond Speedway and with some big money shows on the horizon, it is no surprise that Mike Gular is starting to shine. The Boyertown, Pa., driver is starting the show the form he had last year when he won the Big Diamond Insigner Performance Modified title.

Gular held off a hard charging Timmy Buckwalter to secure his second win in the past three weeks while taking home a nice winner’s share of $3,200. The win also showed that the Terry Fasnacht owned No. 2A team is finding the groove they had last season after a tough start to this year.

“It’s nice to kind of rebound and get back to where we were last season, where we should be and be competing for wins,” mentioned a happy Gular in his trailer after the race. “We were okay early on and I felt we had a couple of wins taken away from us earlier this year, but we’ve been working hard at it and it’s starting to come around. We still are lacking some on the long runs, so we have to figure that out but I think that’s just a few adjustments we have to make.”

Last season at Big Diamond, Gular was a force each and every week and when he got to the front it was game over. However, this season Gular has been run down while leading a couple of races which is very uncharacteristic of the team.

“We’ve been working on the balance of the cars a lot trying to make it so that we can run a basic setup everywhere,” explained Gular. “It’s a constant struggle to stay on top anywhere, guys get better you fall-off a little bit so you can never stop trying or you end up finishing fifth instead of first or second. I am just happy it worked out for us tonight, and hopefully we can win tomorrow at New Egypt and double up the weekend.”

It was a big challenge to hold off Timmy Buckwalter and Gular used some lapped cars to his advantage to be able to hold on and take the win.

“I knew he was there; I couldn’t keep the car stuck down on the bottom,” said Gular. “The car got a little too free there towards the end so I was just chasing the brown at the top and kind of just laid on that as much as I could to get a good drive off. The track was getting wider, and he was getting better down on the bottom. If the race was another five laps, I don’t know if I could’ve held him off, but it was only 25 laps, so it didn’t really matter.

“I knew he was faster than me at the end so I tried to play it cool with the lapped cars and work by them carefully so I didn’t have to break the car down because I knew if I did, he would pounce on me. I was able to use that one car on the last lap as a pick and just glad it all worked for us tonight.”
