Joe August Jr. Keeping the Late John August Family Memories Alive

BREWERTON, NY – For Joe August Jr., the 2022 Dirt Modified Nostalgia Tour season will be about keeping a bond with the past, family history and having some fun along the way. The current DIRTCar Big Block racer runs the Brewerton Speedway on Friday nights but will be behind the wheel of his Father’s Big Block powered John August replica with the DMNT at tracks across Central NY.

The replica car means a lot to the entire August family. “It’s a way to have Johnnie with us” explained Joe Sr. “My Daughter Amelia had me bring her down the aisle to get married in the 17G because she felt it was the best way to have John there with us”

But it’s not just the car itself that carries memories, the engine that powers it has some history as well. “Joey gave his close friend, Steve Hulsizer a car to run and the engine that’s in the replica car now was something I put together myself. He took it to Glen Ridge and beat all the best around with our back up car and the motor I threw together.” Joe Sr. remarked. “It was the last race he would win before he passed”

The 17G has been a project for the August’s for several years now but with virtually all Clubs and Series running vintage/nostalgia style cars not allowing more than 358 cubic inch engines, there was no place to run. This would change with the DMNT Unlimited class introduced in 2020. Joe August Sr. was a happy man. “I said finally, let’s run it”

The current 17G is a replica of a machine John August purchased in 1980, his first factory built car. “Pretty much overnight John was now a competitive top three car, A lot of heat race wins, no features but he proved he could run with the top guys” said Joe August Sr.

John August’s career began in 1968 at Brewerton in the inverted eight class, he would later move on to Late Models and then Modifieds. Joe Sr. would start in 1975 by building a street stock. Before completion however his brother would be out of state with work so Joe ran the modified rather than finish his own car. Midway through the season Joe would lose a battle with the fourth turn wall, destroying the car. “John told me I had to replace it, since then we always had cars together, sometimes two so I could run one also”.

Both John and Joe August were among the founding fathers of the ESS running the very first races at Brewerton.

The current August, Joe Jr. began racing around the age of 16 in his Father’s 358 and over the years has run everything from IMCA Mods to Sprint Cars. He did run one DMNT show last year, at Brewerton but will be the full time pilot for the replica 17G this season. Joe Sr. is unable to compete due to health issues.

The 2022 season kicks off May 21st at the Paradise Speedway, where Joe August Jr. and the August family get their first chance of sharing their history and memories with the 17G.
