Rex King Jr Conquers At Michaels Mercer

MERCER, PA – Michaels mercer raceway completed its 7th program of 2022 on a beautiful end of July Saturday with veteran Jim Morris winning the “Big mav classic” for Racesaver 305s and his 14th career win. Rex King Jr won his 9th big block modified feature; Jeff Schaffer Jr. took his 4th FASTRAK modified feature of 2022; and Andy Thompson his 10th career mini stock feature. Garret Davenport and Brandt Cramer won both jr sprint features. The night also featured bike races for the kids at intermission and all feature winners receive feature winners sign from the twin state auto racing club.

For Jimmy Morris 2022 has been an up and down year without a win in the Racesaver 305s. It all came together Saturday night taking the lead on lap 10 of the Big Mav classic 27 lap event collecting $1000 and earning another $850 in lap money. The night was in memory of former 305 sprint racer Brandon Hawkins who passed away in a construction accident 2 years ago. The feature would get off to a slow start with multiple yellows including a lap 1 skirmish which would eliminate Greg Dobrosky and Jeremy Kornbau as Kornbau would try to continue but suffered a broken shock on lap 2. On lap 3 Roman Jones went high in turn 2 and caught the outside wall flipping over. Jones was ok. The race would stay green as pole sitter Jake Gomola would lead until lap 10 when Morris got under on the inside to take the lead. Gomola would lose positions first to Vivian Jones and then slowed to bring out the yellow on lap 17. On the restart Morris would pull away to win by 1.87 seconds over Vivian Jones. “It was a marathon!!! I was worried about fuel and I used up my tire early getting around Jake (Gomola). I can’t thank my family and friends enough .. it’s a great race track tonight..it’s a sad deal what happened to Brandon (Hawkins) and I’m glad they and the Colwell family put this on (big mav classic)..these kids are tough and fearless they are fast and have good stuff and I’m old but I feel young even though I could be half these kids’ father out there. We are just having fun!!” Kyle Colwell was 3rd, Tommy Jasen 4th and Steve Kennewell 5th.

In the big block modifieds it was an all New York front row with invaders John Venuto and Tony Pangrazio post looking for the first career Mercer checkers. For a while it looked like Pangrazio was gonna pull off the victory until lap number nine when he suffered a flat tire in turn 4. 2 time winner Eric gabany would inherit the lead but he went high on lap 10 out of turn 4 and lost 4 positions. Rex King Jr took the lead over and after a few more yellows held on for a .529 second win over Gabany who came back through the field to finish 2nd. Mike Kinney was 3rd, Chaz Wolbert 4th and Rick Regalski 5th. “It took a little longer then I wanted but we did good . I had to hurry when he was in the brown stuff. Eric is pretty dang good here but it fell into out hands. The track is getting better and better each week and we will be here a lot more!”

In the FASTRAK crate modifieds it was all Jeff Schaffer Jr as he led flag to flag to pick up his 4th of the season and all 4 of his wins came this year. Michael Kristyak had his best run ever finishing 2nd, Caden Petry fell back one spot to 3rd, Shayne Izzo 4th and Brian Schaffer finished where he started in 5th.

Andy Thompson drove the hardest race of his season in picking up his 5th win in 7 starts this season coming from 12th.

Corey Bice would lead the first 4 laps until falling back to 5th on lap 5 when Thompson took over with cousin Carl Ealy in tow. They would battle side by side for the rest of the feature event with Ealy leading laps 10 and 11. On lap 14 Ealy’s steering wheel Came out of his position with Ealy crashing head on into the concrete wall in the pit area in turn number four bringing out the red. With the crash and time expiring the race was declared official as Ealy was transported to the hospital for further observation. Randy Ealy was 2nd, a great battle between Corey Bice and Cole Miller has Miller edging out Bice for 3rd, and DJ MacRae from 15th was 5th. “We run each other harder than any other on the track and we don’t take it easy on each other. We try to give the crowd a good show each week. I saw smoke and smelled something in Carl’s car so I’m not sure what happened. It’s a challenge to finish and win as we have because these guys are tough.”

Michaels mercer raceway will be dark next Saturday but will return in 2 weeks with the Ralph Quarterson memorial western pa sprint championship featuring the 410s and big blocks both running 33 laps paying $3300 to win each.
