KIRKWOOD, NY – For 71 consecutive years one Southern Tier constant has been racing on the historic quarter mile dirt oval at Five Mile Point Speedway. The tradition continues this Saturday, March 20th as the first of two driver practice days will take place. Another practice on Saturday, March 27th will lead in to the 71st Season Opening race on Saturday, April 3rd. The practice/testing session for the teams this Saturday will begin at 2 p.m. The spectator grandstand will not be open for the two practice/testing days at the speedway.
Despite leading the northeast in snowfall this winter with officially 100 inches falling, speedway crews have steadily worked at having the speedway surface ready for the first of two practice sessions. The steady approach during the off-season of snow removal and track grading has set the way for this Saturday’s practice session to take place on schedule.
Five Mile Point Speedway will officially begin a remarkable 71st consecutive race season on Saturday, April 3rd. The annual “Cold Cracker” for the GRIT Crate Sportsman will headline the opening day of racing. The speedway will host a Spring Championship Series on Saturday, April 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. The Spring Championship Series will culminate on Saturday, May 8th when the divisional champions will be decided.
The regular season will start fresh on Saturday, May 15th as the headline Big Block/Small Block Modifieds return to the weekly Saturday night racing card. The full regular season schedule will be released shortly as speedway officials continue to monitor the latest developments regarding New York State Covid-19 guidelines. Spectators are expected to be return to the grandstand this season as we follow all of the updated guidelines as they occur.
The speedway is coming off a 2020 racing schedule that saw the spectator grandstand closed the entire season. Of course, this was the first time in 70 years of operation that this occurred. The quarter mile oval had tremendous race team support throughout the year while speedway officials followed stringent Covid-19 guidelines at every event.
