KIRKWOOD, NY – The 71ST official Regular Season opener takes place this Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway as spectators are welcomed back for the first time since 2019. NYS Covid-19 guidelines will be in place including social distancing and masks being required in the grandstand area. Racing begins at 6 p.m.
The speedway culminated the Spring Championship Series back on May 1st. Four races were completed in that series. The popular Modifieds will return and headline a busy night of racing this Saturday. The Sunoco Modifieds were run on only two occasions in 2020 due to the fact the spectator grandstand was closed. With the re-opening of the grandstands this Saturday, the Sunoco Modifieds will be part of the weekly racing card.
A solid field of the top Modified talent is already in place for what should be an outstanding 2021 racing season at the historic quarter mile oval. 2018 and 2019 Modified Track Champion Brian Malcolm is looking for a “three-peat” beginning this Saturday night. Malcolm took advantage of the Spring Championship Series to run in the Crate Sportsman division and finished fifth in the final spring point standings. Brett Tonkin is expected to return to the weekly Modified ranks at the speedway after he too had a successful spring series behind the wheel of a Crate Sportsman. Tonkin won consecutive features in April. Rusty Smith also took advantage of the spring series in the Sportsman ranks as he too was prepping for the weekly Modified battles at the speedway.
The Insinger Performance Crate Sportsman will also be in competition. Gary Smith, the 2020 Track Champion is expected to defend his title beginning this Saturday. The 600 Modifieds, Street Stocks, Factory Stocks, FWD Four Cylinders and Future Sportsman will be in action this Saturday.
Pit gates open at 3 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 4 p.m. Practice begins at 5 p.m. with racing set for 6 p.m. Adult grandstand admission remains only $12 with seniors only $10 and youth ages 8-14 are $5. Kids 8 and younger will be admitted free.
