KIRKWOOD, NY – Brian Malcolm has made a late season rally in the Sunoco Modified division at Five Mile Point Speedway. That rally has seen him take his first point lead of the season entering this Saturday night’s Season Championship event at the quarter mile oval. Racing begins at 6 p.m. on First Responders Night.
Malcolm, from Lake Ariel, PA won the Modified Track Championship in the 2018 and 2019 race seasons. In 2020 the Modified division was not a weekly division due to the NYS Covid-19 restrictions. If Malcolm were to win the Track Championship this Saturday he would be the first to pull of the three-peat since Chuck Akulis did it between 1994 and 1996. Akulis, considered to be the greatest Modified pilot of all-time at the speedway won the Track Championship an amazing thirteen times. Akulis won the title every year between 1977 and 1985 which unofficially is a national short track record. The Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame will be recognizing Akulis in September as the first stock car driver to earn the honor in the area
A three-peat championship first occurred in the Modified division between 1969 and 1971 when Larry Catlin pulled off the amazing act at Five Mile Point Speedway. Malcolm could become just the third driver to do it in the 71 year history of the speedway.
For Malcolm the accomplishment is far from secured. He has a 19 point lead over Nick Rochinski entering the final point race this Saturday. Malcolm has three feature wins this season and Rochinski has two feature wins to his credit. Brett Tonkin led the point battle for the majority of the season but a tough night on August 28th dropped him to third. Tonkin is well within striking distance as he is only 20 points behind Malcolm for the Track Championship. Barry White currently sits in fourth place in the Modified point standings with one feature. He and fifth place point earner Brian Puckett are mathematically eliminated from title contention.
Gary Smith will be looking to repeat his 2020 Track Championship in the Insinger Performance Crate Sportsman division. He has a slim 2 point lead over Ray Leonard. Dominic Roselli and Seth Zacharias are currently within reach of the title as the top four ranked drivers are separated by only 19 points. Brad Weaver, a one-time feature winner is fifth in the standings but eliminated from the title hopes.
Two drivers in both the Street Stock and Futures Sportsman divisions have the best odds at winning their respective Track Championships. Doug Polhamus leads the points over Gene Sharpsteen in the Street Stocks by 33 points. Dale Folejewski leads the Future Sportsman division by only 1 point over Adam Gilbert.
The Four Cylinder Expert division sees Andy Bolles, Doug Newbigging and Dave Simms all in the hunt for the divisions Track Championship. The Four Cylinder Novice division title comes down to Bethany Gilbert and Austin Slater. Gilbert enters the night as the point leader and is married to Futures Sportsman title contender Adam Gilbert.
The S.W.A.T Exterminating Factory Stock division will see Justin Slezak wrapping up his second straight Track Championship by just starting the feature event. David Brown is the only driver to have locked up the Track Championship in a division prior to Saturday. Brown will be the 2021 600 Modified Track Champion.
This Saturday will decide the Track Championships but we will also be honoring First Responders with a special evening at the races. All EMT, Fire, Police, Doctor’s, Nurses and Active Military personnel will be admitted into the grandstand free with proper I.D.
Pit gates open at 3:15 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 4:15 p.m. Practice begins at 5:15 p.m. with racing set for 6 p.m. Adult grandstand admission remains only $12 with seniors only $10 and youth ages 8-14 are $5. Kids 8 and younger will be admitted free.
