KIRKWOOD, NY…The 72nd Consecutive Official Season has been great at Five Mile Point Speedway with amazing competition in all the classes. It has been a combination of excitement and anxiety as this is likely the final year of racing at the historic oval in Kirkwood, NY. As the season marches forward the month of July is set to end with two major events beginning this Saturday, July 23rd.
This Saturday, July 23rd Five Mile Point Speedway will host “Pack the Track” Night. All grandstand admission tickets will be only $5. Kids 8 years old and younger will still be admitted free of charge. Five Mile Point Speedway coined the “Pack the Track” promotion in 2005 and facilities throughout the United States utilize the idea to this day.
The $5 admission is a huge value for race fans on a budget. It is over half off the regular weekly admission. The racing program on the card for this Saturday certainly isn’t watered down either. The Modifieds will be in action along with a full weekly slate of action in all divisions. In addition, a fun RC car two lap race will take place on the quarter mile oval. A first in the 72 years of racing. Colesville RC Track is signing up drivers for this two lap dash for the checkers as a fun exhibition on the track.
Racing returns on Saturday, July 30th with the most important event of the 2022 racing season, the 58th Heath Memorial. The Heath Memorial honors track founder and builder Irving Heath and his wife Anna who opened the speedway in 1951. The Modified race will be contested for the 58th consecutive year and possibly for the final time. The race will be 40 laps in distance and lap sponsorships are available.
In addition, the speedway will host the Annual Racer’s Reunion where drivers from the past return to the speedway. To be introduced during a break in the racing action. Some of the greats from the past will be on hand to enjoy some of the racing and spend time with their fellow racers from the past.
For both events, pit gates will open at 3 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 4 p.m. Practice will begin at 5:15 p.m. with racing slated to begin at 6:05 p.m.
For several months rumors have been circulating regarding the future of Five Mile Point Speedway. The speedway ownership has a signed contract with a developer for the sale of the property. The closing on the sale of the property is expected sometime in November this fall. Racing will continue through the end of August with an expected five fall races to be added through October as part of the 2022 Fall Series. The 72nd season of racing will likely be the final year at the historic quarter mile oval.
