Jimmy Phelps Pockets $20,000 With Outlaw 200 Win – DTD Exclusive

FULTON, NY – Jimmy Phelps claimed victory in Fulton’s prestigious Outlaw 200, dominating the final 75 laps for his third victory in the event.

“Obviously the track got locked down those first 100, but hats off to them for giving us a racy surface the second half,” Phelps said. “After the first half, I was honestly just hoping to hang onto third, but once I saw they were going through the track I knew we had a piece to win. We’ve been really good all year, consistently a top five car, and when running consistently top five the wins will come. What a race car.”

Mat Williamson grabbed the lead from Rob Bellinger early in the Outlaw 200, showing his muscle in the opening laps and jumping out to a big lead. Before the event’s first caution on lap 29, Williamson gapped the rest of the pack by a straightaway, working lapped traffic better than the rest.

A couple more quick cautions kept Williamson in check, but with a rubbered-up bottom, Bellinger was more interested in falling into second on restarts than challenging for the lead. Bellinger slid back to fourth on a lap 36 restart, with Erick Rudolph and Phelps slipping by.

While a rash of cautions kept Williamson close to the field, it was obvious at the one-quarter mark Williamson had a missile of a Modified. Danny Johnson went to second on a lap 65 restart, clawing past Phelps and Rudolph in the middle of the track where few could make ground. Johnson didn’t stay in second for long, as Williamson, the dominant car of the night, broke a driveshaft under caution on lap 71.

Over the next 25 laps, Johnson held off Rudolph, Phelps, and Bellinger, with “The Doctor” leading the field to the halfway break. With a rubbered-up track, Fulton officials decided to grade up and water the whole surface during the break, throwing the teams a major curveball for the second half of the event.

At the start of the second hundred lap run to the checkered, Rudolph snatched the lead away from Johnson. Rudolph’s lead was short-lived, as Johnson blasted the cushion and to the lead on lap 107. Johnson flexed his power, darting off to a big lead before the caution waived for Billy Whittaker’s flat with 116 laps in. When racing resumed, Johnson went back to the top and drove away, but it wasn’t for long.

On lap 121, Johnson’s right rear tire went flat, forcing him pitside and handing the lead off to Rudolph. On the restart, Phelps blew by Rudolph, then quickly building up a big lead of his own. As Larry Wight spun to a stop on lap 137 with a broken front end, Phelps’ lead had already grown to a full straightaway, and Phelps went back to work rebuilding his advantage when race pace resumed.

With 50 laps to go, Phelps was on cruise control, walking away from Rudolph and Brett Hearn. Stewart Friesen’s dismal day that barely saw him qualify now had him in fourth, while 2017 Fulton big-block champion Tim Sears Jr. had crawled to fifth.

Around lap 160, Rudolph chopped into Phelps’ lead fast, closing to within a handful of car lengths. As quickly as Rudolph ate into the gap, Phelps took off even faster, with the lead back to its maximum by lap 170.

As the race neared it’s completion, Phelps was having obvious struggles with lapped traffic, fighting to get by every car despite the second half of the event having a very multi-groove surface.

However, Rudolph was having even bigger issues with the traffic, unable to get by some cars for laps at a time. This allowed Phelps to hold a big lead, one he would never relinquish, as Phelps claimed his third Outlaw 200 victory in the last six years.

Rudolph crossed in second, while Hearn, Friesen, and Tim Sears Jr. completed the top five.
