BREWERTON, NY – A snowy evening in the Northeast didn’t stop the start of the Dirt Track Digest ISCA iRacing Modified Series presented by Billy Whittaker Cars and Trux from getting under way on Wednesday at the virtual Volusia Speedway Park. Nick Cooper brushed off the snow to kick-off the five race winter series with a win.
Cooper battled fellow pro iRacer Tyler Ducharme for the entire 35-lap affair. It was one small mistake that helped propel him to victory. Ducharme opened the door once and that’s all Cooper needed to drive on by for the victory.
Cooper, who has run a Sprint Car and Sportsman during his real-life career, knew what to expect heading into the night.
“I definitely knew that with these cars it’s a lot of throttle control, you got to keep calm, and stuff like that,” stated Cooper. “It kind of carries over from real life. It definitely worked out.”
Durcharme started from the point after winning the first Integra Racing Shocks and Springs Qualifier with Cooper taking the win in the second qualifier to start to his outside. The two established themselves quickly as the class of the field pulling out on the field early while Brandon Planck and Quinn Wallis holding strong to complete the top four.
That was the way they’d stay until lap nine when Ducharme just entered the corner higher than he wanted to allowing Cooper to slide on by on the inside of the track in turns one and two. Ducharme tried to tuck back underneath of him to no avail.
“I didn’t know how fast Tyler (Ducharme) was going to be,” commented Cooper. “I just told myself to be calm and to get there when I could.”
After a long green flag run with Cooper at the front, the yellow was displayed for an incident in turn three on lap 21 bunching the field together another time. After another quick yellow it remained Cooper keeping his No. 35 in front of the rest of the competition.
As the final handful of circuits was reached, Bryce Bailey managed to find his way back onto the podium after fading early with Anthony Perrego working hard as he attempted to get by Wallis for the fourth position.
Cooper kept up his pace allowing him to take the checkered first with Ducharme finishing just behind him in the runner-up position.
“I’m going to chalk that up to the car fading away,” said Ducharme. “I wanted to try something. I didn’t change anything the whole night. It cost me. I didn’t dial it in enough. He just got by me there. He rolled around me about a groove lower and that’s all it took. I got back to him a couple times. Once you get passed like that, it’s pretty much over. Nick ran a good race there.”
Bailey was pleased with his third place run after missing the setup for the feature. He felt like his finish was a lot better than the way the car handled in the main.
“Honestly I can’t really complain,” stated Bailey. “I had an eighth-place car at best tonight. A lot of things fell into my hands. I’ve struggled a lot with the open sets in these cars. Third in this, I’ll take it on the chin and move on.”
Wallis finished fourth with Perrego finishing in the fifth position from 17th which earned him the Bill Brown and Company Hard Charger Award.
The series is off next week for the Christmas Holiday but returns on December 30 at 8:30pm from the virtual Lernerville Speedway. The event will be broadcast live on the Dirt Track Digest Facebook page as well as for free on Dirt Track Digest TV.
