BREWERTON, NY – Tyler Ducharme came up one spot short in the opening round of the Dirt Track Digest ISCA Modified iRacing Series presented by Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux at the virtual Volusia Speedway. He admitted afterwards he made a mistake. On Wednesday night that was not the case at the virtual Lernerville Speedway.
Ducharme set fast time, won the opening Integra Shocks and Springs Qualifier which earned him the pole for the feature. That was all he needed to help propel him to a win in the 40-lap affair.
“This feels great,” commented Ducharme. “I’m sure there is a big crowd out there watching. I got to thank everyone that comes out and watches these races every week. These races a lot of fun. Racing with these guys is a lot of fun.”
The opening circuit saw Ducharme challenged by third starting Payton Talbot. Talbot worked the bottom as Ducharme planted his No. 25 in the middle of the speedway. The pair stayed glued together with Talbot getting the lead for a handful of laps on the bottom.
Ducharme didn’t give up on his line on the top of the speedway as Talbot held the advantage on the down low. Ducharme hung right off his rear as they each ran their own lines on the speedway.
After a couple of quick cautions for spins, the action continued as Talbot and Ducharme paced the field with Zack Passen looking for a way by in third.
Durcharme finally got the run he was looking for on the top side in turns three and four on lap 10 in order to take back the number one position.
As Ducharme kept his car out front, the race for second heated up as Braden Eyler and Nick Cooper began pressuring Talbot and Passen for positions in the top three.
Talbot’s quality run went by the wayside as he got over the lip in turns three and four handing the second spot to Eyler with Cooper moving into the third position. Eyler closed the gap a bit before Ducharme made a lane change that helped him keep his car in the lead.
“I’m sweating man,” joked Ducharme afterwards. “He was catching me there and I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to do anything but the run the top, I didn’t want to fall off. I started turning down off the corner. I looked at my relative and I was pulling him. That was way safer.”
The top three remained unchanged as the laps clicked off, but everyone got one more shot at Ducharme with only five laps remaining due to a caution. There were no mistakes from Ducharme on the restart allowing him to pull away for the feature victory.
Eyler, who started fourth, ended up crossing the line in second behind Ducharme. The pro iRacer was pleased with the result as he continues to learn the ins-and-outs of the Modified on the sim.
“I surprised myself,” stated Eyler. “Typically, I don’t seem to be the dominate force in any of these cars that run with coil springs. Usually I stick to Sprint Cars, but I have a decent background with these cars in real life. I’m really enjoying these cars on the sim. I figured out something, at least for Lernerville.
Cooper advanced from ninth to grab the final spot on the podium after winning the opener at Volusia. Cooper needed a little bit more to challenge for the win.
“I struggled a little bit there tonight with setup,” said Cooper. “I’m not getting a lot of time to get on and practice, so it’s tough, but I’m happy with it.”
Passen finished in fourth with Brandon Planck finishing in the fifth spot.
Ducharme captured the Matt Becker fast time award with Integra Shocks and Springs Qualifier wins going to Ducharme, Glenn Reinhart and Talbot.
The Bill Brown and Company Hard Charger Award went to Planck.
Planck and his father Dale earned the Short Track Super Series Invite Driver Bonus.
