THOROLD, ONT – Merrittville Speedway’s Reunion Committee will join with the Welland and Fort Erie Timber Marts to present Nostalgia Night and the L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Fame Inductions Saturday July 15th.
Just before Show Time at 7 PM – the focus will be on the CAA Niagara Stage parked at the Start-Finish line when the 2017 Inductees Neil Sharp and Lee Webber will be honored.
Neil Sharp at the age of 82 still helps his grandson Justin Sharp with his Sportsman Car.
Neil got his start in racing in 1962 when he teamed with Kurt Uhl to field a car for Stan Friesen.
For six decades he’s been a car owner and or sponsor of a list of drivers including Friesen, Hughie Tripp, Davey Moore, Harvey Hainer, Doug Gordon, Todd Gordon and now Justin.
Our second inductee got his start in racing later in life when the New York Dwarf Car Association found a new home with us Saturday Nights.
In 2000 and in the 50th Season in 2001 Lee Webber was our Dwarf Car Champion in what is now the Wood Motor Company Modified Lite Division.
Lee and his late wife Rose were among a group that helped establish the division – helping out with the Association and in promotional events to help grow interest in the motorcycled powered cars
When she passed away, the Ro Webber Memorial quickly became a highlight of not only our weekly Mod Lite Competitors but as well from those across North America.
Today Lee is living in North Carolina but will be back at the track.
The second year for our CAA Niagara Dedication Award again will honor two individuals that exemplify DEDICATION
As a kid … Bill Sargent would ride his bike from his home in Fenwick to get to the races
He remained a fan until his son Ken would race in our Street Stock and Pro Stock Divisions earning championships along the way.
It was about that time that Bill would volunteer his time at the track … helping with vehicle maintenance and track preparation – something he continues to enjoy today!
The second CAA Niagara Dedication to Racing Award honoree is another one dedicated to making things work around Merrittville – Howard Schram
Back in the day he was involved with drivers Al Wagner, Ray McIvor and Rob Pietz.
He’s been part of the Track Preparation Crew for a number of years and works throughout the week on track maintenance.
Saturday June 15th when the gates open there will be Vintage Race Cars on display and the Pinty’s Delicious Foods 358 Modifieds will be featured in the 50 lap Jerry Winger Memorial.
