Susice Triumphs at Merrittville

THOROLD, ONT – Niagara Employment Help Centre Night at Merittville Speedway featured the 28th running of the Sterling Silver Trophy for the S&W Service Centre Sportsman Division. Niagara Falls’ Driver Rob Knapp scored his first Feature Win of 2017 taking home the special award.

Also in the spotlight was Hagersville’s Dave Bailey whose 7th win of the season came in the Hoosier Stock Duel on the Dirt Series Home Track Event.

The Bobcat of Hamilton Weekly Racing Series Event saw 4 drivers visit Victory Lane for the second time of 2017 – Jay Moulton, Tyler Winger, Gord McIntosh and Ryan Susuce in the Central Fabricating & Welding 4 Cylinder, Wood Motor Company Modified Lite, Novice Sportsman and Pinty’s Delicious Foods 358 Modified Divisions respectively.

“This car is good in the heats … but it’s not quite right in the feature,” said Knapp, the 20th different winner of the Annual Award created by former racer Ken Walsh in 1990 that honors the memory of local racing pioneer Bill Willard Senior, “I’ve got a 7 year old car … a 4 year old engine and used tires – I’m so glad I could the guys with newer stuff. Good Night or bad … I’ve got a great team – this is just awesome.”

Dave DiPietro was first to lead the 25 lap event before fellow front row starter Rob Goulding took control the first time down the backstretch

By lap 5, Goulding opened up a lead of some 5 car lengths on Rob Knapp who had just taken over second spot.

Knapp would quickly track down the leader and on lap 6 was able to pass Goulding.

Just as Knapp became the new leader the only caution slowed the pace with Knapp out front once again on the restart. The return to action saw Jay Mallory move into the runner up spot.

Brad Rouse was able to take over second spot some 5 car lengths behind Knapp.

Knapp would lead the field into lap traffic in the closing laps but there was no catching him.

Knapp, Rouse and Mallory were followed by Cody McPherson and Goulding.

“I had a shot on winning Wednesday … but I gave it away,” said Dave Bailey in Hoosier Stock Victory Lane for the 7th time of 2017, “Thanks to Ryan Dinning and Trevor DeBoer … they’ve helped me on the car recently … it’s cool when your competitors step up and help you out.”

It was a Podwinski front row to start the 20 lap Feature with father Bill beating his son Tanner to the initial green flag.

Vince Fargnoli was quick to challenge as was Jim Lampman and Kyle Pelrine. Fargnoli and Pelrine were side by side for top spot by lap 4 until Pelrine took control.

Dave Bailey was quietly making his way to the front and became the new leader to start lap 5. Lap 7 would find Bailey slowed but once back to green – Rob Murray was in second by lap 8.

With Bailey out front of quite a race amongst the top 5 his advantage quickly became about 10 car lengths. At the finish … Bailey stretched his lead to about a ¼ lap lead over Murray, Pelrine, Lampman and Dave Small.

“I just took my time … I didn’t want to get caught up in anything,” said Jay Moulton after his second 4 Cylinder Feature Win of the season, “Late in the race I was starting to get a little worried seeing the 12 coming on the Leader Board.”

The start of the 15 lap Feature saw Vincent Pagnotta and Trevor Want battling for the lead until Pagnotta was clearly out front on lap 2.

Want would challenge back but would soon face challenges himself from Austyn Werstroh and Moulton who would take over second and third.

Werstroh and Moulton would both take on Pagnotta for top spot until Moulton took control down the backstretch of lap 8. A lap 12 caution would set up quite a race for third with Moulton out front.

Tony Kelly and Alex Riley would both take on Werstroh.

Kelly would take over second the final time down the backstretch.

At the finish, Moulton was followed by Kelly, Werstroh, Riley and Garnet Wilson.

An early caution would slow the 15 lap Feature for the Wood Motor Company Modfied Lites but it wouldn’t slow early leader Steven Beckett.

By lap 2 the former Karter had opened up a couple car length advantage until a red flag stopped the event on lap 4 after Rob Misener flipped in Turn 4 after contact with team mate Brent Begolo.

With Tyler Winger the new leader on the restart, Beckett and Jeff May would join him in a breakaway pack which was about a straightaway by the finish.

Winger was followed by May. Beckett, RJ Pietz and Begolo.

Dave Mamo was first to lead the 10 lap Novice Feature before Gord McIntosh took control on lap 3.

Quickly McIntosh would drive away to a straightaway advantage through to the checkered flag in the caution free event. Following McIntosh was Mamo, Greg Rauscher, Paul Cunningham and Scot Sonnenberg.

“I thought lap 30 was it,” … said Ryan Susice in 358 Modified Victory Lane for the second time of the season, “when in rained I was thinking we were done for the night … thanks to Merrittville for staying with it – it all ended up working out great.”

The lap 30 incident was almost disaster for the top 3 drivers – Scott Wood, Gary Lindberg and Susice – the only thing Susice lost was a little momemtum.

Todd Gordon was first to lead the 35 lap Feature – setting the pace until a lap 4 caution. Gordon resumed control on the restart but by lap 6 – the new leader was Scott Wood.

Behind Wood the race for second was three wide between Gordon, Susice and Lindberg before the order got sorted out. Susice would take second on lap 11 and set his sights on the leader.

By lap 15. Wood had opened up a 5 car length lead with Lindberg taking control of second on lap 23.

4 laps after the near miss, Susice caught Lindberg and would take over the runner up spot. Into Turn 3 on lap 32 Susice would get by Wood and would cruise to the checkered flag.

Susice, Wood and Lindberg were followed by Chad Brachmann and Tommy Flannigan.
