THOROLD, ONT – Saturday June 9th remains a special date for the Cosco Family as it was in 1998 that Merrittville Wall of Famer Pete Cosco won his first 358 Modified Feature at the Thorold Track.
Twenty years later in his 5th season in the David Chevrolet Sportsman Division Cosco’s grandson Jordan Cosco of St. Catharines won his first Feature Event.
Submission Subs Night had Alex Riley of Thorold win Round 2 of the Hardys Racing Triple Crown Insta-Panels Duel on the Dirt Series Event for the Central Fabricating & Welding 4 Cylinders.
Mat Williamson and Rob Murray both of St. Catharines, Brent Begolo of Thorold, Adam Plazek of Caistor Centre and Sean Iftody of Welland also satisfied their hunger with wins in the S&W Service Centre 358 Modified, Hoosier Stock, Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale’s Mod Lite and Dave’s Auto & Speed Centre V6 Divisions while Iftody won the first Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale’s Enduro Qualifier by Niagara College.
“I’m really at a loss for words,” said former Tuesday Night Kart Champion Jordan Cosco in Saturday Night Victory Lane for the first time, “This one’s for you Papa! I can’t thank my grandmother (Linda Cosco) … my parents … Baron Roofing’s Terry Keagan and all our sponsors and everyone that’s supported me since Day 1.”
Robbie Johnston was first to lead the 25 lap Event and by lap 5 had driven away to almost a ¼ lap lead on Ryan Ferri who was in second. Cosco quickly began to challenge Ferri for the spot – taking control on lap 8. With everyone racing for position behind him, Johnston had stretched his lead to almost a full straightaway.
By halfway, increasing lap traffic appeared to slow Johnston some what with Cosco making a huge gain in tracking down the leader on lap 15.
A few laps more on the Randy’s Smoke Shop Turn 1 Lap Counter found Cosco taking over top spot with Johnston now being pressured by Greg Panunte and Jay Mallory.
At the finish, Cosco was followed by Panunte and Mallory with Johnston and Ferri closing out the top 5 in the caution free run.
On a night that also featured the annual Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdales’ Best Dog Contest it seemed fitting that the Niagara Ice Dogs #17 of Alex Riley would lead the field to green to start Round 2 of the Hardys Racing Triple Crown Insta-Panels Duel on the Dirt Series for the Central Fabricating & Welding 4 Cylindes.
Riley would overtake Jeremy Cooper the first time down the backstretch and by lap 5 had opened up a lead of some 17 car lengths until caution slowed the pace for the first time.
Former Overall Champion Tyler Lafantaisie came to a stop in Turn 4 with Riley out front once again. Olivier Larocque took control of second in the return to racing with opening round winner Cole Hardy closing in on second spot to the half way mark.
Hardy would take over the position on lap 11 about a ¼ lap behind Riley. Just before a lap 17 caution, Riley was into lap traffic when both Anthony Kelly and Austyn Werstroh came to stops in different spots around the d-shaped oval.
With Riley out front on the restart once again, the run to the finish had Riley and Hardy followed by Larocque, Cooper and Rob Sauder.
Riley’s run in his Niagara Ice Dogs #17 was almost matched by Fred Carleton in his Bones Mobile #96 later in the night’s 35 lap Feature for the S&W 358 Modified Division Feature as the second generation racer was first to lead.
With Carleton holding a comfortable lead on Todd Gordon by lap 5, the race to watch was the one to sort out the Top 5 in the early stages between Tommy Flannigan, Mike Bowman, Mat Williamson and Chad Brachmann.
With some incredible action taking place behind him, Carleton was able to build almost a straightaway lead by halfway. On the move in the late stages was Williamson who took third spot and began to close in on Gordon.
Veteran Scott Wood and rookie Tom Neale almost met with disaster after the two came together with no caution. Carleton’s pace would be slowed however on lap 28 with Williamson the new leader on the restart.
Williamson who started 10th drove away from the field on the restart for his 5th win of the season with Carleton settling for second. Brachmann, Flannigan and Gary Lindberg rounded out the Top 5.
For the second straight week, Dave Small was looking to best the Camaros with his Metric Car and out of Turn 4 to complete lap 5 took top spot from initial leader Jason Fontaine in the 20 lap Hoosier Stock Feature.
2 laps later, caution would slow the field with Small the leader once again on the restart and quite a race for position between Fontaine, Rob Murray, Brad Sheehan, Dave Bailey and Kyle Pelrine.
After some 2 and 3 wide action, Murray would land in the runner up spot and by lap 9 was the new leader. Two laps later Brad Sheehan would take over second.
At lap 20, Murray and Sheehan were followed by Small, Bailey and Pelrine.
Tyler Winger set the pace at the start of the 15 lap Feature for the Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale’s Modified Lites until caution would slow things on lap 5.
With Winger back in control, drivers on the move were Brent Begolo and Josh Sliter. Begolo would take second from RJ Pietz on lap with Sliter taking third on lap 8.
With three laps to go, Begolo would take over top spot through to the finish for his 4th win of 2018. Winger, Sliter, Jeffrey May and Pietz rounded out the Top 5.
John Couture was first to lead the 12 lap Feature for the Dave’s Auto & Speed Centre V6 Division with first time starter Kvin Conley into the runner up spot.
Conley’s #9 was one of the red cars on display inside the front gates built by Dave’s Auto and Speed Centre with the winner of the other car built by the Division Sponsor to be picked in the near future.
Adam Plazek joined Couture and Conley at the front of the field and the three would open up a lead on the pack. By the third lap, Plazek was in the runner up spot and by lap 5 was the new leader.
In the last half of the race, Plazek opened up almost a straightaway lead with Couture and Conley as the Top 3. Tinna Ronning, Alana MacDonald and Chris Mussat closed out the field.
Sean Iftody took control of the 25 lap Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale’s Enduro Qualifier by Niagara College from James Mercer on lap 4 before the event was stopped on the 9th lap after Mercer rolled his car in Turn 2.
Once back on all 4 wheels, Mercer was able to drive away but headed straight for the pit area. When action resumed. Iftody was back in control before quite an exciting battle for top spot with Joe Bleich began.
With the two eventually into lap traffic action got intense with cars 4 wide at times. Iftody and Bleich would swap the lead several times before Iftody took control for good taking /the white flag.
Iftody who will now start Sunday August 12th’s 100 lap Enduro from the pole was followed by Bleich and Shawn Fader.
