Mahoney Wins Thunder on Dirt Vintage Series Kickoff at Dog Hollow

The CarSmile Wiper Blades Thunder on the Dirt Vintage Series kicked off the 2017 season with the 2nd Annual Jim St. John Memorial race at Dog Hollow Speedway this past Friday.

Thirteen vintage cars signed in pit side despite the threat of rain in the forecast. The field consisted of many veteran vintage club drivers as well as some rookie new comers. Les “the Reno Rocket” Myers fielded his new ’34 Ford Coupe coil car, and his son David Myers brought out his new sportsman Mudbus. Alan Pahulick a Penn-Mar Vintage club member, joined us for the first time with his Tobias Mudbus, as well as rookie sportsman driver Jeffry Mitchell an his coupe. Matt Hildenbrand brought out the car he bought over the off season from New York as well. Chris Ketch whose car was not ready quite yet drove the 47B big block coupe of Al Byerly for the night. After all the cars went through tech inspection it was finally time to hit the track for the first time of 2017.

Promotor Dan Savino and his crew at Dog Hollow Speedway prepped at great track for the nights racing program. Les Myers and Dan Osmer won their respective heats, and both had to earn their wins with the lead swapping back and forth several times in each 8 lap heat.

After some more track prep and a short rain delay, it was time for the Jim St. John Memorial feature event. Vintage veteran and member of the Leechburg Legion Kevin “Marbles” Mahoney, got out to an early lead and never looked back. Les Myers made every attempt to real in the 4 of Mahoney but to no avail, as Mahoney easily sailed to the checkered flag followed by Les Myers, and Jim Kurpakus rounding out the top 3. David Myers finished fourth overall and picked up the sportsman division win over Dan Osmer and his screaming 6 cylinder and Jeff Mitchell finished third in his first race ever. Alan Pahulick due to contact and Paul St. John both suffered from mechanical problems during the race ending their nights.

Once again the vintage cars put on another great show for the fans at Dog Hollow Speedway.

The CarSmile Wiper Blades Thunder on the Dirt Vintage series will return to Dog Hollow Speedway in September for the Connor Bobik Memorial.
