HOGANSBURG, NY – Night number two of the Mohawk Nationals at the Mohawk International Raceway saw clear skies finally as the finale for the DIRTCar Sportsman North Region and DirtCar Pro Stock Series highlighted the evening along with exciting action in Mod Lite and Bandit divisions as well.
The DIRTCar Sportsman North Region final was ready for a 40 lap event and Bear Ridge regular Kevin Chaffee took the lead at the drop of the green flag over Fire Swamp, Dave Rogers, Travis Bruno and Bucko Branham. Chaffee had a fast car as he led the first 21 laps of the event but Fire Swamp was looking to defend home turf, as he closed in for the race lead. On lap 25 Swamp was able to get by and drive away while Dave Rogers remained close in the number two spot with Chaffee and Bruno giving chase. Swamp continued to lead the way but Dave Rogers began to close the gap and put pressure on Swamp for the lead. On lap 31 while battling through the lap cars, Dave Rogers found the fast lane as he took over the lead with Swamp back to second and Travis Bruno making a charge past Kevin Chaffee for the number three spot. Over the final laps, lapped traffic and the rest of the field had no chance of catching Dave Rogers as he duplicated his performance from the Pete Mitch Memorial one night ago, to claim his first ever DIRTCar Sportsman tour win. Travis Bruno was credited with 2nd after Fire Swamp failed post-race technical inspection. Robert Delormier, Kevin Chaffee and Ben Wheeler completed the top 5.
The DIRTCar Pro Stock Series was in town for round number four of the tour and Massena’s Kevin Fetterly Jr. was looking to win one for the locals as he led the field early with Justin White, Tyler Bushey, Chad Jeseo and Luke Horning making up the top 5. The outside lane began to take shape and everyone migrated to the cushion which made passing very tough. On Lap 7 veteran Peter Schroy slowed in turn two with a flat tire. On the restart Fetterly continued to show the way over Justin White but the driver on the move was Chad Jeseo. The Albany Saratoga and Lebanon Valley Speedway track champion was on his way to the lead and making the inside lane work as he took 2nd from White on lap 17. On lap 18 Fetterly would have problems slowing in turn 2, allowing Jeseo to get by for the lead. As the laps clicked off Luke Horning started to join the party as he closed in on the race leader with Ian Bressett making a late race charge up to the third spot. Jeseo remained in control but coming to the white flag the caution flew, bunching the field up for the final restart. When the green flew nobody was stopping Chad Jeseo as he marched on to his first ever DIRTCar Pro Stock Series win over Luke Horning, Ian Bressett, Justin White and Scott Towslee.
The Bandit division held a special 20 lap invitational and 22 drivers took to the speedway. A pair of yellow flags slowed the first few laps of the race but once the laps clicked off 2021 track champion Francis White led the way over Tony Frezzo, Gary Sharlow CJ Lavair and Matt Leonard. The top 2 drivers would distance themselves from the rest of the field and put on a show that got physical towards the end. White held the bottom while Frezzo tried the high lane and the top side proved to be fast as he took the lead briefly from White. On the final lap the action picked up as the top two battled for the win. Heading into turn three, Frezzo tried the high lane but White drifted up the track and both cars nearly got the wall. White would go on for the win over Frezzo. The runner up was not pleased with White and contact was made resulting in White’s car having to be towed to victory lane.
The 20 lap Mod Lite feature had a come from behind performance from Tucker Halliday. Early on in the event Halliday was leading the way but on lap 3 he would lose the handle on his race car, spinning in turns 3 and 4. On the restart Kyle Demo would lead the way over Brad Harris and Jason Premo. Demo had a great car but Brad Harris moved in to try and challenge but Tucker Halliday was on a mission. After restarting last, Halliday cut through the field quickly and ran down the leader. On lap 16 Halliday drove by Kyle Demo to take the lead. On the same lap Harley Brown took a flip in turn two and the red flag flew. Brown was not hurt, however the car was done for the night. On the final restart Tucker Halliday would hit it perfectly as he marched on to score his second win of the weekend. Kyle Demo came across 2nd over Brad Harris, Jason Premo and 2021 track champion Tristan Dibble.
