Wight Fast On Friday, Takes Pole For Eastern States 200 – DTD Exclusive

By BOBBY SWEENEY

MIDDLETOWN, NY – A day’s worth of qualifying set the stage for the Eastern States 200, with Larry Wight nabbing the pole for Saturday’s big-block Modified event. Wight time trialed fourth during the day, which would usually be where he would line-up for the feature event, but a Race For The Pole event gave 12 drivers a chance to drive their way to top starting spot. Wight took advantage, taking the $2,000 win in the Race For The Pole, and the first starting spot for tomorrow’s feature event.

Tim Fuller grabbed the lead at the start of the 20-lap pole dash, with Wight quickly working into second. Wight stalked Fuller for a short time, jumping up top and driving to the lead on lap six. Wight instantly pulled away, jumping out by three seconds before a lap 11 yellow.

Wight kept up his pace on the restart, driving away from the battles behind. Max McLaughlin nosed out Fuller for second on the last lap, but that battle was nearly six seconds behind Wight.

“I feel really good, especially considering this was a bare frame on Sunday,” Wight said. “Brandon Ford and I tore one car apart and slapped this one together, then Rob Hile and Kevin Lamphere jumped in with the motor, put some used parts on it and it ran good. It’s a little different combination than what we’ve been running the past five or six years, and I think it was the right direction for us.”

This year’s edition of Eastern States Weekend is full of change. One scheduled change is the date and time of the 200-lap finale. Historically, the Big Block 200 has always been on Sunday afternoon, but is slated for Saturday night this year. The switch to night should create a drastically different race than a day show, evident by the rain-delayed event that ran at night last season.

“I think it’ll help a ton with the track,” noted Wight about the time change. “There’s guys who can pit and get fresh rubber and charge to the front, and I think running at night will get rid of that single lane racing and allow us to make those moves work. I think it’ll be less attrition, less riding around and saving tires, and make it more of a driver’s race, so I’m definitely excited for that.”

Last week, Wight had quiet week at Port Royal Speedway’s 200-lap Short Track Super Series event, but ended on a high note with a late charge to finish fifth. Despite the different track, tire, motors, format, and much more, Wight thinks both races may play out closer than expected.

“I think it’ll be pretty similar to last week, as long as they don’t try juicing the track up too much,” stated Wight. “I don’t think they will because of dust, but on the track the dust wasn’t bad at all. Maybe it’s just because we were great tonight, but I hope they don’t touch the track all that much. It opened up at the end of the night and we were able to move around a lot like we were last week.”
