“Hollywood” Craig Mitchell Shines In 358 Modifieds At Orange County

MIDDLETOWN, NY – The official season for the H.O Penn Small Block division kicked off their season at the Legendary House Of Power on Saturday April 10th. 41 entries of stacked competition were in contention for the $2200 pay day. Four heat events and two consolation races set the field with Tyler Dippel, Ben Bushaw, Tommy Meier, and Anthony Perrego winning each heat and Mike Kolka and Corey Cormier collecting last chance qualifier wins.

After a last man standing redraw It would be Butler NJ’s Jimmy Spellmon and the 2020 Sportsman Champion Tanner VanDoren on the front row. As the green flag waved, Jimmy Spellmon would have the edge over VanDoren who was making his debut in the Small Block division. Jerry Higbie quickly made his way around VanDoren but after only one lap scored, a caution would be displayed for an incident in turn 4.

On the restart it would be Spellmon over Higbie. Higbie would begin to reel in the #28 of Spellmon for a few laps. Behind them a three car battle would ensue between VanDoren, Ben Bushaw, and Craig Mitchell, with Mitchell claiming third. Another caution would arrive on lap 5 restacking the field. The next restart the unthinkable would happen. The top two, Spellmon and Higbie, both who looked to be speaking in victory lane, would become tangled in turn 1 after a leading Spellmon seemed to have something break and collect Higbie ending both competitors evenings.

Craig Mitchell, now restarting on the pole with Tanner VanDoren next to him, took over the lead on the next green. Anthony Perrego worked his way on by the 22 of VanDoren and would try and hunt down the Goosetown Communications #93X of Mitchell. The defending Small Block Track Champion Perrego would get as close as he could before the duo would hit heavy lapped traffic. The action was still strong behind the two as Danny Creeden, Tanner VanDoren, and Tommy Meier would try and gather the third position. In the end however, it was another Veteran campaigner entered into the history books for 2021 as Craig “Hollywood” Mitchell was declared victor in the first Small Block Modified event for 2021. “ I hope to do this more. This one right here is for my mom who passed away in March and Kenny we lost him in an accident. He was my tire guy last year.” Concluded Mitchell in victory lane. Jimmy Horton was awarded the Behrent’s Performance Warehouse Hard Charger award. Orange Auto & Truck also rewarded Craig Mitchell with a bonus.

The Arkel Motors Sportsman division had over 40 contenders for the night’s top podium spot. Joey Brunning, Ryan Nieger, Dylan Smith, and Bobby Flood were victorious in the heat events and Mike Dubois and Brian Krummel collected last chance qualifier wins. Jordan Lawrence and Lem Atkins brought the field to its start. Jordan Lawrence took an early lead and began to extend his lead as Johnny Bockhorn grabbed second and Grant Hilfiger and Josh Allen battled for the third position. Unfortunately Josh Allen would spin out in turn 2 while contending within the top 5 bringing out the first caution. The field restacked with Lawrence and Bockhorn leading. On the restart a hard charging Joey Bruning would work his way on by the Bockhorn #97 and into 2nd. As Bruning went by, former track champion Grant Hilfiger would come along and gather up the third position. Bruning would not stop there as he would work his way on by the Lawrnece #7L. Bruning gained the lead there and maintained it all the way to the end.

The Precision Hydraulic Rookie Sportsman competed in their first event of 2021. It was Alyssa Fogel and Bob Jashembowski who started the event off. Jashembowski would gain the lead and Dylan Madsen would take over second. However a caution would come out for the #399 of Nick Giardini a Street Stock graduate. The restart would have Jashembowski and Madsen sitting front row. Madsen worked his way around the Jashembowski #26 and went unchallenged for the remaining laps. “ I can’t thank my guys enough. This was Brett’s car when he won the championship here in 19’ so to bring it back to victory lane is definitely special for everyone my dad, my grandpa, my grandma, everyone. Yeah it feels awesome!” said Dylan.

Texas Roadhouse awarded all feature winners of the evening with a special bonus.
