Roger Henion Jr Wins Small Block Modified Feature At Orange County

MIDDLETOWN, NY – 34 H.O Penn Small Block Modifieds checked in for competition this past Saturday nights Interstate Batteries Night at The Legendary House Of Power. Roger Henion Jr, Jimmy Spellmon, Rich Eurich, and Anthony Perrego collected their heat wins and Johnny Lieto was victorious in the last chance qualifier. After qualifying, handicapping would have “The Rock” Chris Shultz and Chris Stevens on the front row for the $3,000 to win 30 lap feature event.

At the start, veteran racer Shultz took the lead. Stevens would follow and “The Mayor” Mike Kolka would file in behind in third. Behind the trio however, as laps winded down a very fast Allsion Ricci would begin making her way through the pack. Ricci would battle side by side with the #555 of Leo Fotopoulos taking away his fourth place efforts and then dueled with Mike Kolka for third where she would also collect that position. Up front Shultz and Stevens were running away from the field, but it was Ricci reeling them in each lap. As Ricci was on the charge, behind her was Jimmy Spellmon and Roger Henion Jr who both managed to get around both Fotopoulos and Kolka.

Allison Ricci would get on by the #83 of Chris Stevens for second and have her sights set on leader Chris Shultz. Allison got right next to Shultz in what looked like would be a lead change, but a caution would come out for the #5L of Charles Loiodice. On the restart, tragedy struck as going down the backstretch cars would come together resulting in Ryan McCartney spinning and hitting the outside wall. It was then that disaster would strike as Gary Edwards Jr. would hit McCartney and go upside down near the exit off the backstretch. When the field recouped, Shultz and Ricci were the chariots. Shultz would maintain the lead, but it was Roger Henion Jr who would get on by Ricci for second and then make his way around Shultz for the lead. Jimmy Spellmon and Allison Ricci would battle and both would get by Shultz who was running second but it was too late as Roger Henion Jr. would check out and pick up the $3,000 pay day. “ I can’t believe I won!” is how Henion Jr explained his victory for the night.

Over 30 Arkel Motors Sportsman competitors were entered for the night’s events. Jake Bedell, Joey Bruning, Jared LaBagh, and Josh Allen were the heat event winners and Cody Higbie was the last chance qualifier victor. It was newcomer Ryan Walther and Dylan Smith who would make up the front row for the 20 lap feature event. At the start, Walther would keep his top spot. Dylan Smith was left to deal with an approaching Bobby Waters Jr. and Pennsylvania’s Josh Allen. The trio would mix it up, but it was Allen who prevailed and grabbed second position. By lap seven, Allen wasn’t letting second be his last stop, as Allen would get around the #10W of Walther for the lead. Ryan Neiger who started mid pack was on the charge through the field at this point, impressively passing three cars on the front stretch. The first caution would be displayed on lap nine for trouble involving the #105 of Trevor Arnold.

The next restart would result in mayhem as Bobby Waters Jr. would spin in the apex of turns one and two resulting in a major pile up which saw Gary Edwards Jr go upside down. The field would recover and Josh Allen would still be your leader. Allen would maintain his lead at the next start checking out from the field as laps dwindled down. Behind him however, the #5 of Ryan Nieger was doing all he could to get by Ryan Walther. Jared LaBagh would have full momentum as well running the high side and battling with Butler NJ’s Jake Bedell advancing towards the front but a caution would be displayed on lap 16 for the #91 of Bobby Flood. At the next start another round of carnage for the division would take place. Cars would come together out of turn four, resulting in a massive pileup with the #186 of Frank Frasco flipping upside down and onto the stopped cars. When the field restarted it was 14 year old Josh Allen at the controls of the feature event. Allen would make his way out front and never be challenged again for the lead.

15 laps of Precision Hydraulic Rookie Sportsman action placed Pennsylvania’s Alyssa Fogel and former Pro Stock racer Joey Mennite on the front row. Fogel would lead the way at the start, but not for long as Mennite would take it away. A lap later, Bob Jashembowski would get on by both Fogel and Mennite and become the new race leader. He didn’t come alone however, as “The DeerPark Diva” Isabella VanOrden would go on by Fogel and Mennite and take over the rights to second place. A caution would come out for the #19 of Mark Connoly who found himself in trouble. Jashembowski and VanOrden would re-fire out of four and as Jashembowski led the way, VanOrden would capitalize and take over. Brett Weslowski and Dylan Madsen would make their way into the top five early until another caution would be displayed for the #F1 of Fred Pavia. VanOrden and Jashembowski would bring the field to the green on the restart and VanOrden would keep her lead, but this time Madsen and Weslowski would attempt to get into the runner up spot. Madsen would get on by Jashembowski for second but the final caution would come out for Thor Holmgren who was in trouble.

Dylan Madsen seemed to be moving quick and he would find himself now with a final shot to dethrone VanOrden. As the green waved for the final start, VanOrden would keep her lead but Madsen wasn’t too far off. As only four laps were left, Madsen had to dig deep to get by VanOrden. However, VanOrden was on her A-Game and became the third Rookie Sportsman feature winner of the season. “This highside is gnarly. Like Jared (LaBagh) said it’s flat open.” explained VanOrden in victory lane. VanOrdens lap time of 22.971 was faster than every sportsman competitor in the Rookie field and the Arkel Motors division.
