SUSQUEHANNA, PA – What would race day be without rain? It would be nice to find out. July 7th saw Penn Can Speedway get hit with heavy rain right at the start of the night. What brought back memories for some diehard fans were the old-time mud laps. 5 divisions of race cars hit the track to help pack the track and get the night started.
Palmerton Pa, native Joey Grammes kept the momentum going into the month of July. Hitting victory lane twice in June, the Big Creek Concrete sponsored #5j is the car to beat.
“My brother and Butchie give me the car to win. Combine that with the track surface getting better every week makes racing fun again.”
Former track champion Alan Rudalavage and Steven Deinhardt ran a classic battle with Rudalavage taking second. Current points leader Dan Pompey and Mike Colsten would round out the top five.
The 602-crate sportsman saw a $100.00 bonus to the winner donated by Sharkeys Fuel before they hit the track. Brian Mady led the field to the green for a 30-lap feature. Jeremy Williams would have to settle for a DNS has the #00 would not fire on pit lane. Mike Shane returned to form right on the start and took the lead by lap #2. First time invader Corey Cormier put the pressure on Schane for the last 10 laps but would cross the line just behind the #m16 of Schane. Tyler Singleton, driver of the #18, was disqualified. After being towed to the infield, he attempted to reenter the race track on foot as the race was restarted. Due to his on-track behavior, he has been suspended for two weeks from all events at Penn Can Speedway.
It seems to be the Robinson show when it comes to the 4-cylinder class. Brothers Mike and Dylan can put on a clinic for some side by side racing. The mutual respect the brothers has given the fans the show they come to watch. Mike would pull into victory lane and Dylan would be the first to congratulate him.
The Xcel 600 modifieds were close to a photo finish. 2 inches separated the winner at the line. Travis Rigante took the checkered flag for the first time this year. Young gun, Bailey Boyd, continues to turn heads. An electrical issue side lined the driver in the heats. Starting p13 had Boyd deep in the field, by halfway Bailey was looking to take second over Rigante with Byron Worthing the leader. Lap # 11 saw Worthing go pit side and Rigante the new leader. 9 laps of door to door racing had all eyes on the pair until the checkered flag waved for Rigante.
Factory Stock driver Stephen Simpson will enjoy victory lane next week. After post-race inspection, the #614 of Eric Beach was to be found illegal. Chuck Culbertson earned second with Jim Sykes rounding out the top three. Eric Beach received no points or pay for the night. He will also receive a two-week suspension for numerous rule infractions.
Penn Can Speedway returns next Friday July 14th for a night of excitement. Hopefully we can have a rain free race day.
