The upcoming show encompasses the majority of the local short track scene and has become a must go to event in the local Tri-State area. Quaker Steak & Lube, located a mile East of the Phillipsburg Mall on Route 22, is the lead sponsor for the event and along with IRCO and a host of great associate sponsors, are showcasing the exciting week of activities at the Mall. The event hits a milestone in 2017 with the tenth edition of the show having a very special meaning to the hard working staff, who for the most part, have been on board since the initial phone conversations and meetings put the pulse and excitement into the show. The show continues to be FREE to the public.
Before or after the show throughout the week, Quaker Steak & Lube encourages the Mall goers to stop in before or after the show to enjoy a tremendous diverse variety of entrees and their famous wings and sauces to get re-charged and re-charged for the week long of events scheduled at the Mall.
The headline show of the opening day will be the gathering of racing legends at approximately 1 PM to talk about their racing days at the Nazareth 1/2 mile and Nazareth National Speedways and Dorney Park to honor Modified/NASCAR legend, “The Pride of Pen Argyl” Tighe Scott and well noted author/publisher/racer Lew Boyd, who wrote “Paved Track/Dirt Track” and the Bill Wimble book, “I’ll Never Be Last Again.”
Scott came up through the Sportsman ranks, quickly moved into the Modifieds and jumped into the limelight by scoring eleven wins at Nazareth in 1975-76. Wanting to do more in racing, Scott punched a ticket for a ride in one of Walter Ballard’s race cars to go and compete in the NASCAR elite division. Scott found success in the series and earned a sixth place finish in the 1979 Daytona 500. Scott also found good success on the Central Pennsylvania Sprint Car circuit and came back to the Modified wars to finish his career in racing. Scott went on to become a very successful businessman and entrepreneur in his hometown of Pen Argyl where he still has residence to this day.
Lew Boyd is a New Englander who raced with success throughout the Northeast steering Modifieds and cut downs as they called the cars in the New England area. Lew, Dick Berggren and Bruce Cohen formed the “Jewish Lightning Team” for racing and would later promote the very first “Spring Sizzler” at the Stafford Springs Speedway in 1972. While still competing, Lew began to get the urge to write about his racing exploits as he raced against some of the very best in the Modified world. His first book, “They Called Me The Shoe” was highly regarded and would be the basis for many great books that came out of his Coastal 181 publishing house and “Paved Track/Dirt Track” is a great book about two competing Sunday night venues one in Old Bridge, New Jersey and the other in Nazareth, Pennsylvania brought Lew and the Pados Brothers together and Lew paid a couple of visits to their Gasoline Alley TV/Internet program.
Lew along with the late Bill Wimble, brought Bill’s story to life with “I’ll Never Be Last Again” and the book is a great tribute to the poor dairy farmer who not only became a champion racer but a successful businessman and great gentleman. Lew and his wife Cary head up Coastal 181 and offer the very best regarding stories for racers. the website is: www.coastal181.com
For the tenth consecutive year, IRCO Community Federal Credit Union will once again lend their solid support to the popular show. IRCO was formed in 1966 and has grown in leaps and bounds to it’s present state today. The Saint John’s Angels Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society group and will be selling backed goods and their purple ribbon-branded merchandise throughout the duration of the show.
The Phillipsburg Mall has proven to be a popular setting for this special event and will once again offer many varieties of new and vintage race cars, racing memorabilia, collectibles and photos on display throughout the Mall for the duration of the show’s run. The nine previous shows have brought out race cars from all divisions of motorsports filling the Mall space as the past, present and future of racing have been highlighted in a week long show celebrating the love each of us has found in attending races and meeting so many wonderful people associated with the sport. With an exciting and diverse schedule of events to whet the appetite of any true race fan, large crowds are expected to flock to the show to fill the wide walkways of the Phillipsburg Mall for the upcoming ninth edition of the show. This event is truly a Mall favorite and one of the leading attractions, continuously drawing outstanding crowds and successful events promoter Bob Miller and his wife Donna spearhead the hard working staff of individuals responsible for the continued success of the show.
