It wasn’t the weekend to write home to for the Pauch’s at Bridgeport Speedway on Sunday for the Short Track Super Series ‘South Jersey Shootout.’
Out of a 40+ field of Modified’s, Pauch Sr. and Jr. landed themselves in the same heat race. Pauch Jr. rolled off fourth and Sr. rolled off fifth.
“We went backwards on the initial start,” Jr. said. “We got tangled up with another driver and got pushed up and fell back to seventh. We battled our way back though and got fifth. Were able to pass Hearn and Laubach, which is always a challenge in itself.”
Sr. made some moves from his fifth place starting position and picked up the win in the heat race. “The car felt good,” Sr. said. “I thought we had a good car for the feature after that.”
Pauch Jr. was meant to roll out mid-pack for the 40-lap feature but was side-blinded by a broken universal joint in the driveline on the pace lap.
“I was happy with the balance in the car,” Jr. said. “I thought we’d be a little bit better in the feature but unfortunately that didn’t go too well. We didn’t even take the green.”
A pre-race redraw was held determining the top 12 spots. Pauch Sr. drew number 12. Pauch Sr. got into a first lap skirmish on the backstretch causing him to get tangled up with other cars. He went pit side to change a flat tire and was able to make it back out in time. “The car just wasn’t good after that,” noted Sr. “I decided to ride it out after that for points since we’re up in the points in the Short Track Super Series.” Sr. rounded out the night in 20th.
Pauch Sr. mentioned that he hopes to bring out his retro No. 15 Big Block Modified to Bridgeport Speedway this Sunday, April 30th. The No. 15 is in memory of his late father, Leroy Pauch.
Pauch Sr. will once again be back at Bridgeport Speedway this Sunday. Pauch Jr. will be at Big Diamond Speedway this Friday, New Egypt Speedway Saturday and Bridgeport Speedway on Sunday.
