PORT COLBORNE, ONT – The Humberstone Speedway is continuing to finalize plans on an exciting and busy 2017 season at the historic Port Colborne, Ontario speedplant.
A major change for 2017 will be at the admission gate where anyone 18 years of age and under will be admitted free on race nights, starting on May 21st. “Allowing age 18 and under free admission will hopefully attract High School students in the region to come out and join us for a Sunday night of fun” states General Manager Bob Davidson. “Humberstone is working hard to keep the cost down, making us the most affordable family entertainment in the region” Davidson continued. “With this, we are looking to increase both our fan base and driver rosters, and that’s what we need to do to keep growing the sport” Davidson explained.
Another change is in the tech department as Glen Hils has been appointed the Head of Tech. Glen brings several years of experience with him as he has served nine (9) years as head technical inspector at the Ohsweken Speedway and is currently in his 12th season in the tech department at the Flamboro Speedway. Any tech questions can be sent to Glen via email at ghils@hotmail.ca “Humberstone is not anticipating any major rule changes for 2017 and will work closely with Glen and the racers for any major changes in 2018” explained Humberstone Speedway Race Director Tom Beales.
Later this spring, the only original building left on the speedway property when it opened some 60 years ago will be coming down as an updated pit canteen (concession stand) will be replacing the one that has served the speedway for so long. “With the updated canteen and more improvements to be announced, we hope this will clear up any rumors of the neighboring quarry purchasing the Speedway” adds General Manager Bob Davidson. “We are here, we are not going anywhere and we are here to stay” Davidson added.
A new series that will be coming to Humberstone on Sunday May 21st will be the BEI Lightning Series for the Sportsman. The BEI Lightning Series was created in 2014 by Brian Bellinger, a 20 year racing veteran to give the dirt Sportsman a bit more to race for with a good paying point fund, giveaways and better pay throughout the entire field. The Sportsman will also be featured in two Race of Champions Sportsman Series events and a 100 lap Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series race this season. “The Sportsman have supported Humberstone since the beginning and we are featuring them in four special events with a bigger purse” explained Race Director Tom Beales.
Stay tuned as Humberstone Speedway has even more news to release including a major event will put the Pete Cosco Memorial Weekend over the top. Side by Side UTV racing is coming to Humberstone with support of Performance ATV and Leisure. Humberstone is home to the All Canadian Championships, the region’s longest running dirt event. This years edition is even bigger as we will have competitors coming up from as far away as the state of Alabama.
