Dachenhausen Sweep; Father and Son Victorious in Open Wheel Features

BETHEL, NY – Saturday Night short track racing resumed at Bethel Motor Speedway after the previous week’s rain out, and the fans were delighted to see some amped up action at the bullring. The end results found a family affair in Victory Lane as the Dachenhausen racing family saw both father and son doing the open wheel feature sweep for the second time of their careers and first time this season.

The night was highlighted by the double points 30 lap Interstate Batteries Asphalt Modified feature which found Mike Dutka, a veteran driver but rookie in the modified class, jumping out to the early lead. Dutka looked steady as he led the first seven laps despite having former champion, Steve Conklin in hot pursuit. Conklin made a dive for the lead in turn three but locked up the brakes which allowed fifth position starting Tyler Dachenhausen to capitalize and take over the second position along with Wayne Kirkpatrick moving up into third. Dachenhausen then began to challenge Dutka for the lead, the two drivers battled for the lead for several laps before Dachenhausen was able to gain sole possession of the position. Modified master, John Cote came from the rear of the field and was able to pass Kirkpatrick for third, then passing Dutka for second two laps later. On Lap 10, the yellow flew for a spinning Mike Dutka, which gathered the young Dachenhausen and the veteran Cote side by side on the restart. They drag raced down the frontstretch when the green flag waved, and Cote challenged hard on the outside lane, staying even for several laps but as the run went on, it proved Dachenhausen was the car to beat as he was able to pull away from Cote in the races later stages and capture his first feature win of the season. Cote came across the line second with Kirkpatrick in third position.

The Extreme Kleaner Sportsman feature found former champion, Jerry Curry pacing the field in the first half of the race, meanwhile versatile driver Ed Dachenhausen methodically moved his way up through the field and overtook second position from Rich Coons. As the halfway mark was being displayed, Dachenhausen made a gutsy power move on the outside of the strong running Curry in turn 3 and was able to make the pass stick, completing the pass down the front chute. On lap 11, the red flag flew for a grinding crash in turn 2 which saw rookie driver Shawn Maloney losing control of his car while running in third position. The car nosedived hard into the wall and smothered the challenging car on the outside driven by Rick Mill hard into the wall as well. Mill found himself in the wrong place, at the wrong time as both cars sustained heavy damage and were both towed off. When racing resumed, Dachenhausen was able to maintain his lead to the checkered despite constant pressure from second place running Curry. Kyle Redner advanced through the field to pick up third place in Extreme Kleaner feature.

Legends feature action proved to be very competitive with Alex McCollum jumping out into the early lead from his third place starting position along with ARCA campaigner Joe Graf Jr quickly following into second position as Sean Verwys lost grip and spun out of turn four. McCollum and Graf Jr, restarted the racing running side by side for several laps with McCollum maintaining the low side. The two long time rivals put on a spirited battle for the lead, with Graf Jr. throwing everything but the kitchen sink to get by the leader. However, McCollum never slipped and stayed cool throughout the race despite the numerous challenges by Graf Jr. Eyes were also on another Graf, as Joe Sr. was charging through the pack from his eighth starting position and overtook a strong running Teddy Bowen for third position on lap 17. With only a few laps remaining the elder Graf caught up to the leaders and began to pressure the younger Graf for second on the final line. At the checkers, McCollum took home the flawless victory, his first of the season quickly followed by Graf Jr, who had a similar second place finish during the previous week at Talladega followed by the hard charger of the event Joe Graf Sr.

It was a duel to the finish in the Interstate Batteries Pro Stock feature as veteran drivers Larry O’Donnell and Ed Butler put on an epic side by side battle for over 20 laps which kept fans on the edge of their seats. On Lap 23, with just two laps to go, O’Donnell slipped ever slightly in turn 2 and it was just enough for Butler to do a crossover move down the backstretch and nose ahead going into turn three. At the checkers, Butler beat O’Donnell by a car length followed by John Roese in third.

The Shakelton Auto Parts Street Stocks, found Bill Deak Jr. collecting his first career street stock feature win at Bethel. Deak Jr, found it was no easy task despite taking the lead on lap 2. Deak Jr, had his hands full as Brian Bauerfeind made several charges for the lead, the tight caution-less racing action proved to be a nail biter for Deak Jr, but he was able to out gun the competition as the checkers waved. Second and third place was delivered to Walt Henry and Bill Deak Sr. due to a post-race penalty on Bauerfeind.

Robert Beach, a veteran four cylinder racer picked up his first feature win of the season. Beach, is always a contender to win when on the track found himself patiently moving up through the pack and into the top three on lap 4 meanwhile Cliff Levinson was pulling away from the field from his second starting position. Beach ran side by side with former champion John Houghtaling for several laps before securing the second position. Beach then went ahead and chased down the leader Levinson. At the halfway point, Beach powered his way into the lead. Levinson and J. Houghtaling stayed within striking distance but could not challenge the leader, as they finished second and third.

Bandoleros, found Brian Rygielski as the leader in the first lap of the feature before defending champion Mike Roth tracked him down from his fifth starting position. Roth quickly got by B. Rygielski and charged into the lead. Garrett Zacharias was on a mission as well coming from mid-pack to take second position on lap 4. G. Zacharias was able to catch Roth but was unable to challenge the strong running Roth for the lead. Roth picked up his second win of the season, closely followed by G. Zacharias. Joey Aungst crossed the line third.

The Beginner Bandolero Feature, found former slingshot driver Colton Geary picking up the feature win despite it being his first ever start in the car. Geary was able to pass previous race leaders Monica Deckelman and Leland Oefelein to pick up the win. Kaden Rogers finished a strong second place at the stripe.
