HURON, SD – The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, S.D., on Saturday, July 1 for the All American Outlaw Shootout presented by American Bank & Trust/American Trust Insurance. The event will mark the second visit by the Outlaws to the track, which is located at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds. Donny Schatz picked up the win in the series inaugural event at Dakota State Fair Speedway. Along with the racing action a Fireworks extravaganza by the Huron Noon Lions will take place after the final checkered flag flies. This edition of The Breakdown sets the stage for the All American Outlaw Shootout presented by American Bank & Trust/American Trust Insurance.
Dakota State Fair Speedway in a semi-banked, three-eights-mile. The track record of 14.593 seconds was established by Joey Saldana on June 20, 2015.
Donny Schatz was victorious in the inaugural World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series race at Dakota State Fair Speedway in 2015. The eight-time and defending series champion, started third and took the lead from 2013 series champion Daryn Pittman on lap-10. Schatz would remain out front for the remainder of the 30 lap A-Feature.
Jason Johnson has a pair of wins at Dakota State Fair Speedway in ASCS (American Sprint Car Series) competition. Those victories came back-to-back in 2007 and 2008. Johnson, the 2014 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series, is a five-time ASCS titlist.
The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series has 15 card-carrying members this year, led by Schatz. Brad Sweet is currently second in points, with David Gravel in third. Shane Stewart recently moved to fourth in points, with Pittman rounding out the top-five. Johnson currently rides sixth in points, with rookie Sheldon Haudenschild seventh, Logan Schuchart, eighth, Jason Sides ninth and Kraig Kinser 10th.
Also on the road again this year are veteran drivers Paul McMahan and Greg Wilson, as well as young drivers Jacob Allen, Clyde Knipp and rookie Brent Marks.
Shane Stewart and Jason Sides both made their debut at Dakota State Fair Speedway in 2002 in a Gumout Series event. Stewart finished second in that race, while Sides crossed the line fifth.
The next generation
A group of young drivers is leading the next wave of World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series competitors. Leading the way is Connecticut native David Gravel, who has nine wins this season. Gravel will be making his second start at Dakota State Fair Speedway.
The Shark Racing team of Logan Schuchart and Jacob Allen are on the road again this season. Schuchart finished 10th in 2015 at Dakota State Fair Speedway.
Greg Wilson, the defending Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner, will be seeing Dakota State Fair Speedway for the first time, as will teenager Clyde Knipp from Missouri. Knipp is in his first full season with the series, after joining the tour last summer, after graduating from high school.
Sheldon Haudenschild from Ohio and Brent Marks from Pennsylvania, who are battling for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award, will each be making their initial start at Dakota State Fair Speedway as well.
Among the “invaders” expected at Dakota State Fair Speedway to take on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series regular on Saturday, July 1, is Kerry Madsen, who won with the series on the second night of the AGCO Jackson Nationals. Mark Dobmeier, the winningest driver in the history of River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., is also expected to compete at Dakota State Fair Speedway. Dobmeier has one-career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win. Kevin Ingle, who hails from Huron will also be in attendance.
