Tom Collins Cruises To Sunday Night Short Track Super Series Crate 602 Sportsman Victory At Thunder Mountain

CENTER LISLE, NY – A flawless performance.

After winning his heat race on Sunday night at Thunder Mountain Speedway, Tom Collins authored a flawless green-to-checkered performance in the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Crate 602 Sportsman Labor Day weekend special, leading from green-to-checkered in the 25-lap main event.

Sunday’s program was the third of five Crate 602 Sportsman North Region races on the 2018 STSS schedule.

A redraw of position No. 2 put Collins on the front row at the wave of starter Gary Folk’s green flag. Collins, a former Thunder Mountain regular, left no doubt he can still negotiate the three-eighths-mile banked track, going unchallenged for the duration of the main.

The win for Collins was his second with the STSS this season. He won a South Region program at Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway in April.

Chance Spoonhower of Berkshire, N.Y., climbed from fifth to finish second, with Thunder Mountain track champion Jimmy Zacharias of Candor, N.Y., marching to third from 16th. Corey Cormier of Otisville, N.Y., placed fourth after starting 10th and Ray Leonard of Thompson, Pa., who ran inside the top-five for the entire distance.

A stout field of 38 STSS Crate 602 Sportsman signed in for action.

Heat winners were Collins, Larry Mekic, Dave Marcuccilli and Marc Goodwin. Will Eastman and Garrett Rushlow split the consolations.

Thunder Mountain Speedway is located at 91 Hunts Corners Road Center Lisle, NY 13797, approximately 25 miles north of Binghamton. The three-eighths-mile clay oval features hillside concrete seating, free parking and camping, a variety of concession items and novelties, a family environment and more.
