Lebanon Valley Speedway Small Block Modified driver Brett Haas is Going FOURWIDE during a career year on the high banks for his Brett Haas Racing #55 team. Brett has two Wins and sits second in the points championship. We sat down with Brett to discuss his season so far.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS DRIVING YOUR SUCCESS THIS YEAR ?
“Without a doubt confidence. It is absolutely amazing what having confidence has done for our race team. I can specifically remember going down to Orange County Speedway this year with no expectations and leaving that night with a heat race win. Not that a heat race win is the greatest achievement by any means, but I think it took our entire team by a bit of surprise, especially not being our home track and passing track regulars to get the win. I can remember thinking to myself..”I finally found my confidence behind the wheel again”. From there, not only myself, but our entire team have been firing on all cylinders and it has truly been the shot in the arm we all needed, and it has flowed into our Lebanon Valley season.
Brett has two wins on the season on the high banks , Jason Herrington, Guy Sheldon and Frank Harper each have one win, Andy Bachetti has six wins so far this season , Haas has not let Bachetti’s string of wins deter him.
HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED, OR DEALT WITH ANDY HAVING THEY TYPE OF YEAR HE IS HAVING WHILE YOU ARE HAVING A GREAT YEAR YOURSELF?
“I don’t like comparing our season to Andy’s because he is truly having a career year in the small block class, but so are we and I don’t want his season to over-shadow ours. He is seemingly to be in a league of his own speed-wise, but our consistency has kept him within striking distance in the point standings, and having two wins, multiple seconds, and only finishing outside the top 5 once has shown that we as a team are capable of getting our first 358 championship, but if it doesn’t happen, I will not be disappointed in the year we have had up until this point.”
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON?
The goals for the rest of the season are the same as they have always been my entire career, be patient, move on from the things that are out of your control, and finish every lap.
Now Brett is Going FOURWIDE with four quick hit questions …
1. WHY ARE YOU #55 ?
My father. He had run pro stocks for the entire ’90’s into the early 2000’s so I naturally adopted his number. He told me that he chose that number because May 5th was day that he and my mother officially started dating.
2. WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST RACING INFLUENCE?
My father without a doubt. We talk and laugh all the time about how he got his very first car from trading a snowmobile, and the car was about 500lbs overweight. His goal was to finish an entire night of racing, but would typically blow up, the go to my grandfathers junkyard to piecemeal another motor for the following week. He managed to get through that phase and then move on to become one of the most well known, and respected pro-stock drivers to ever turn laps at Lebanon Valley. That is a legacy that I truly hope to live up to.
3. MONEY ASIDE , WHAT KIND OF CAR WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY RACING?
Like mostly everyone, we think of the “what if we hit the lottery and don’t have to worry about money”. Every single time I say that I would love to run late models. I wouldn’t know the first thing about setting them up, but there is something that they way they look, sound, and just the overall bad ass racing that comes with them that I want to be a part of.
4. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU WERE GIVEN?
The best advice I was given and continue to get every single time I get ready to head onto the track is clear your head, and also use your head. Racing can be a mental sport and when we are strapped into the cars on a warm summer 90+ degree day, losing your temper or focus can be quite easy. We always have our goal on the big picture, and while we may lose the battle, by simply following this thinking,I believe we can eventually win the war.
