WOODHULL, NY – He was a farmer, truck driver, lumberman, coal dealer, and a mechanic. You could call him a jack-of-all-trades if you wanted to- the man just did it all.
George Williams even ran a dance hall a couple of times. Williams never went to a race until 1963. His son Bob built a racecar in 1962 and George started going to the races with his son in 1963. In 1964, after a year of going to the races with his son, George got upset with a local promoter and could see some things at other tracks he did not think was right. This sparked the idea for Woodhull Raceway.
The entire staff, fans and competitors will pay tribute to ‘Founding Father of Woodhull Raceway’ on Saturday night with the annual running of the George Williams Memorial races. This special night at ‘New York’s Toughest Bullring’ comes just days after Williams’ birthday.
Griffith Energy and the Elkland Moose will present the night’s racing action. A pre-race observance for Williams, as well as all of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting for the freedoms we enjoy, will start the evening off on a high note.
The Insinger Performance 370 Modifieds will race ten extra laps, for a cool $2,000 top prize. Fresh off his first victory of the season, Westfield, PA pilot Billy Van Pelt will try and shoot for his second straight victory. But hot on his heels will be last week’s second place finisher Russell Morseman, who has come to life in his K&N Filters, Lucas Oil Products No. 44.
Also on the racing card for the night will be the NAPA Crate Sportsman, SWL Awards Crate Late Models, Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks, Daughtery’s Auto Sales & Service Mini Stocks, Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drives, Daugherty’s Auto Sales Warriors and Hobby Stocks.
Fans can find their way into the grandstands Saturday at 4:30 for only $13 for adults 13 and up. Seniors and ages 8-12 will be $7. Children 7 and under are always free at Woodhull Raceway. Pit passes have been set at $30.
Our weekly Early Bird Special runs from 4:30-5:30 and offers $1 off general admission. Woodhull Raceway offers plenty of space for free camping on site. The green flag for the first set of heat races will be dropped by Scott Lyon at 6:30.
